You talk about ANAKHI and you immediately think 2nd nature, but what else? Have to think don't you? And most of you out there will be hard pressed to come up with anything else. Don't blame you, they haven't exactly set the bhangra world alight with any groundbreaking stuff, sorry to be blunt but the truth needs to be told. Ok, so you might argue and say neither have a lot of other people, but the difference here is that there is potential here, which isn't being reached. This new, and somewhat low key offering to the bhangra public may be different, lets see
Track one MITHRO, had this on in the coach we booked to Alton Towers and on hearing the beginning of this track one girl went, "oh god! here we go" ok, so she wasn't much of a bhangra fan anyway, but I'm just highlighting that this has a very desi starting but when it kicks in then the fun begins. Packed with a wicked chorus lyric that applies to the thoughts of many boys at every Mela in the country. The music, which if analysed, doesn't have any trace of what you would associate which other tracks (i.e. heavy bass etc), which make it big, but it works!
It's the return of 2nd Nature! Well, some of lyrics anyway. I'd describe this as typical Anakhi, if there is such a thing. That's probably because of the recycled lyrics. The music is upbeat without really being attention grabbing. I like the strong vocals on this, but maybe not the lyrics. The only thing the lyrics have going for them, which incidentally is also a downside, is that they are repetitive and easy to pick, which, to all you budding producers out there, is the one sure-fire, guaranteed way to make a track memorable and thus, popular. Overall a good track but nothing really that's going to leave a mark in the market.
To quote in the inlay of the album track 3 surreal is "skilfully woven together
unique combination of three different musical styles and vocal styles" I guess the boys and girls at Kiss are quite proud of that little build up to, makes it sound quite impressive doesn't it? 2 words, BULL SHIT. You think ripping of the chorus of an old bollywood song is UNIQUE? Get a dictionary mate. As for the la la la at the end, hmmmm
incidentally the talents of Miss Niki Louise and Urban Mc are wasted in this track, as they have a very mainstream sound. Anyway, back to the dissing, the track is shit.
Umbi (Latin Garage Mix) Right, where to start on this one? The music is good, why? Cos its from an old garage song! The name defeats me at this moment in time, answers on a postcard to usual address
J I'm not really sure of the thinking behind using the bit of Latin music, it will probably appeal to 3 people out of everyone who hears it, and there the ones which made it! The vocals and lyrics are actually quite good; shame the music let the track down.
Hasna. It's a nice song, which is just a polite way of saying average song, the lyrics, vocals and music complement each other well. It's a track on an album you don't mind listening to but it's not the one you would put on CD if your making a compilation for someone.
Umbi (Latin) OH NO! Not the Latin music again, bloody hell. I would really appreciate some feedback from Kiss highlighting the motivation in using this music, which has so magnificently destroyed this track on such a gargantuan level. Like I said before, perfectly good song except for the dreaded Latin beats! Don't really know how high to place it on my list of blatant album fillers, maybe 10th. Enough said.
Dil Vaarke. I quite like this tune; maybe it's the music, which manages to be up-tempo but relaxing at the same time, I'm very impressed. Or maybe it's the lyrics and vocals, which are excellent in there own right but accentuated by the music. I could be cruel and say its only cos it very late, into the early hours of the morning infact, that I like the mood the song creates, but that would just be silly.
Onto the last track which is none other than Ammiyeh. You may be forgiven for thinking how have Misteeq made it onto Anakhi's album, but rest assured you fan's of the garage diva's, no they haven't taken a major drop in credibility by joining kiss records, they aren't that desperate. I guess its just Kiss ripping the music. A very slow song doesn't really have an impact and the emotion of the song doesn't really shine through as much as it should.
The word disappointing doesn't even start to cover the feeling I have towards this album. The obvious potential locked away in the lead singers voice is nowhere near being exploited to its maximum potential, I could really see him having a smash hit song if he was working with one the better producers, but that's only my opinion. Apart from one track, it's not even worth wasting petrol going to the shop to get it, never mind buying the thing! Respect to the very nice lady presenter on asain sound radio (Sorry I don't know your name) who gave to me the album at Heaton Park Mela. Overall a 5/10. |
