B21's
Long Overdue

The B21 album (can we call it that?) is finally here! The album which was meant to be released soon after the EP, 'Made In England' all the way back in the summer of 2000. It is now being released in controversial circumstances. It looks as though B21 are about to split up, so before this could happen Moviebox have anticipated a possible loss in revenue and very quickly released the album without even consenting the group members. Total madness or what? The album is named 'Long Overdue' which is very true, but the name is a bit of a pi**take and it must have been named by the label. Moving swiftly onto the album itself.

It kicks off with 'Jawani.' The song starts with a B21 trademark, a cool intro - so enjoy that. The tune was ready over a year ago but it has now been revamped from what it was. It was a top song before but now it's an absolutely brilliant song with some tight lyrics. All I can say is g'waan B21 for producing yet another PHAT track. The background music is taken from the English song called 'Missing You' by the group 'Everything But The Girl' and subsequently been remixed with this old song.

A brand new song, namely 'Jaan', follows this. The mixing is above average, but it is not the best song that they have ever relased. Still having said that it's still a nice desi dance floor bhangra tune. Maybe I need to listen to this one a bit more to get into it.

Next, we got another new track called 'Dil.' Its traditional tune remixed by the boys from Birmingham. Again this tune is not bad but it falls well short of the high standards B21 have set over the years.

Then, we get the songs from the 'Made In England' EP remixed. The two songs had 2 mixes on the EP so you think that that would be enough, but think again. Firstly, theirs 'Kuriya' which has not been changed a lot at all. The only change being parts of the hit track 'Barsi' being mixed into it.

The 2nd track from 'Made In England' EP is the hugely successful 'Darshan.' Again, there are no major changes to this tune apart from a slight increase in the bass-line plus some annoying explosion sounds added in at set intervals.

Finally, theirs the Jawani remix. This version features more traditional beats and dhol. It's much more chilled out but personally I prefer the first version. It's a very long song at over 7 minutes, so for me it kind of gets a bit boring and repetitive. This song starts of with a message in the background which you will pick up if you listen to it carefully in which it says "all the people who don't like, to all the motherfukers, doing what we do, trying doing what we do, but you cant, you are not in our league....huh..huh.." All I can say to this is who do you think you are, cuz you ain't that good. You should let others compliment you, not compliment yourself, sounds very arrogant if you ask me!

So all in all, the so-called album has only 3 new songs. So Moviebox think that £10 is a reasonable price for this? Don't get me wrong I love bhangra and hate to say anything against anyone. It just annoys me that they, Moviebox feel that they can charge whatever prices the feel like. Time after time they charge RIDICOULOUSLY EXTORTIONATE prices and expect us bhangra fans to part with our hard earned cash. Moviebox are just robbing tw*ts out to make as much £££'s as they possible can. Never, ever has a Moviebox release had the Recommended Retail Price (R.R.P) on it! What is the reason for this? To me it just PROVES that they want to rip us off as much as they possible can. Simran says, "Please Please Please Please put on the recommended retail price on your next release."

Finally, I will make some comments on the so-called splitting up of B21. If it's true then it's bad news for the bhangra scene and it's the end of an era. Their best album to date was when they burst onto the scene with the album 'By Public Demand' and since then they have been one of the best bhangra bands in the UK. There have been various suggestions for their split. If it really is the end, it just seems a sad way for B21 to part. Anyway, good luck to the trio from Handsworth with their solo efforts in the future.
