Bohemia; his name is everywhere nowadays. Radio, T.V. Internet...this Punjabi rapper has been dominating the airwaves. His smooth beats and tight flow are like a breath of fresh air in this bhangra industry, so overwhelmed by the same repetitive beats and songs, from the same labels. Thus, when an artist like this makes an effort to be unique and different, it should be encouraged and applauded. Bohemia 's song style might gel with some, might not with others. But you can't ignore this guy's sheer talent and style. True Desi Gangsta style this one.
He released his first album, "Vich Pardesan De", on his own with the help of some friends. Since then, he's teamed up with Bally Sagoo and Ishq Records, and has released his 2 nd album called "Pesa Nasha Pyar" - Money, Drugs and Love. In an interview with desitunes4u, he had stated that his first album was a realistic look at him and his crew growing up on the streets of Cali . His 2 nd album though, is going to be a true club-filler. With this anticipation, I open up the CD and wait for what this talented artist has to offer. Onto the main event: the album.
First track up, UK style, it's an Intro. But it's different from your regular Punjabi album intro's in which various voices are bigging up the artist. This intro contains random clips from different people, some dissing him (mostly elders), and some "feelin' his music" (mostly young generation). The intro ends with a white guy asking him ‘how is his music an inspiration', because he sees it as a negative image of South Asians.
Next up is the answer to that question mate. Bohemia let's it rip on a track simply titled D.E.S.I. Chilled, laid-back beats and then in comes Bohemia . The first line itself tells you that this guy is not some wannabe Punjabi rapper. He's the real deal, his flow rhymes, and he makes sense all the time. Sample this, the very first lines, "Asa vade shikariyan the rab rakhwalla, gali gali'ich bohemia da bol bala..."! He's not singing about some pind, or khet back in Punjab , he's singing about the streets of L.A. or New York . He's singing about the pind of the newer generation of Punjabi's. His lyrics don't contain talks off ‘maa' or ‘bhen', his lyrics are about parties, daru, nasha and stuff that us desi's in our 20s and 30s relate to. He talks about even though he's muslim, he's got a Patel friend who's chill, a Jatt whose build like Rocky Balboa and fights like him, and we desi's should live together, and "aish karangey, gorey aadmi de des vich"! Anyways, back to the song, amazing song to begin with. Not something you play at a club, but when your chillin' at home, drinking, smoking, straight west-coastin', that's when you blaze this track. Thumbs up on this one mate!
Onto the 3 rd track, Do Dat Dance. This is a true club-thumper. Amazing beats once again, courtesy Sha1. He's telling that now he's reppin' Ishq Records and Bally Sagoo, and basically talks about living life to the fullest. Tight flow throughout the song. You can either get drunk and party it up on this song, play it in your car loud and proud, or even just listen to Bohemia 's words on this song, it's a hit in every aspect. Sure winner this one.
"Gangsta Sh*t" is the next track. Straight up rough desi track, good beats once again. He's talking about partying it up in the club, living the life of a gangsta, and all the chicks that come to him and his crew. Good track. One for all the desi thugs in the crowd.
Numero 5 is called "Veera." It's a short track, 1 min 13 secs long. Seems to be like an album filler but it's a great track nonetheless. Good rapping by Bohemia once again. He's talking about how poor desi's struggle here to make enough so their family can sleep at night. And inspires them that they're not alone in this, there are many more who are fighting for the same benefits that we want for our families and ourselves.
Onto track 6, for Rilly Though. Bohemia 's ripping on all the wannabe rappers and fakers in the desi industry who think he sucks. But when Bohemia faces this one wannabe rapper, he sucks up to him like no other. Time pass, nothing else.
Track 7 features Asian rapper Sin, and Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg!! That's big for a desi rapper. It's a decent track, tumbi beats with some nice b-line. Bohemia 's rap as always, overpowers everything else. Snoop's got like 4 lines which he keeps repeating throughout the song, but he's still very much present on the track. Good enough track, I wasn't feeling it that much. Mostly because of the lower quality of music production.
Next track...Kurti featuring Asian R&B up-n-commer, Sir Punj (formerly known as TJ KOOL). Great R&B track. Sir Punj's smooth voice compliments Bohemia 's rapping perfectly. Great production and Sir Punj's charming voice make this track a sure one for the desi clubs.
Track 9 – Sahara ; this is the track with Kji in the video, and Bohemia chilling on the streets of Oakland . It sounds great every time you hear it. A very relaxed tune, the video takes it to another level. Bohemia goes sentimental on this one, and is about talking about love, support and the moments they spend with each other. Awesome track no doubt. You must have definitely heard it, and if you haven't, you have to, to understand what I'm raving about. A definite classic.
Next up, Mundiyan To Bach Ke. Now calm down! Bohemia 's not teamed up with PMC and done a Panjabi Jay-Z on it. The only thing similar between the 2 tracks is the name. Totally different songs though. Bohemia 's representing his place, Oakland , in the song. He's not telling a girl to beware of the boys, rather he's telling all the other gangs and thugs that they better beware of him and his boys. A very gangsta statement for sure, this is what sets Bohemia apart from anyone else. He's not forgotten his roots, and raps such a difficult song so easily; you'd think Punjabi was MADE for rapping.
Onto the track of the moment, Kali Denali. This is what Bohemia and Asian Rap is about. Southern Hip-Hop style beats, with Bohemia on it, and you know the track sounds like something straight outta ATL or Texas . Line of the track - "Kali Denali, gaddi de sheeshey kaale, mere pichhey lagey chuavi ghantey police vaaley!" Top stuff here from Bohemia .
This is followed by what can be described as an intro to the next track. A voice message is welcoming Mixman Shawn (in-house DJ for the crew), into the Outfit. Sha1 leaves a message asking him to up the ante on the next song featuring desi rapper Rdikulus and Bohemia .
Track 13, "2 Of The Best" ft. RD and Bohemia . RD lays down decent beats on the track in English, and then Bohemia spits like no other!! Good track, I'm feeling the music. Mixman Shawn's done a decent job on this one.
Next one's a song called "Chordo." A down-n-out song by Bohemia . It's got a very grime-feel to it. Bohemia 's telling the world to leave him and his problems alone. This song gives Bohemia a chance to flex more of his punjabi rhyming skills, and he tops it all once again with some tight flow. Something to listen to when your drinking and contemplating problems in your life. What a track!
Track 15's called "Bhulja". Hip-hop beats once again, good track. The party starts with Bohemia rapping on about telling a girl to forget him; he's too much of a thug for her. He's not into love-shove, he's into Pesa and Nasha, and Pesa aur Nasha da Pyar. Nice one by Bohemia , good production.
Onto numero 16, "Nachiye." more hip-hopish beats follow. This is a proper dance number. Something to get the kudi's grinding to; I'm loving this track. A gem hidden right towards the end of the album. The chorus goes perfect with the tune, "Aaja aake nachiye ek doojey de naal ni, aake mele'ich paale dhamaal ni!" Great track boy!
Next up's a track called " Remind Me. " Bohemia 's talking about how the girl he just met, reminds him of his first love. He's talking about how everything she does, the way she talks, walks, remind him of someone else. One of the best parts in the song is when Bohemia starts singing "Gud Naal Ishq Mitha...O-hoo"! Solid production, and the talent known as the Punjabi Rapper, tears this track. Another slow, laid back tune, the vibe is something all the boys and girls who've been in love know what he's talking about. Tight!
Track 18's another voicemail left on Ra's ( Bohemia ) message system. A guy with a deep voice says he's taken care of some situation. I guess it flows in with the whole album and Gangsta image. Anyways, not much to say!
The last track of this 19-track monster album comes in. It's called Sade Warga. Yup, this is the same Sade Warga you heard on the album "West Coast Desi", as well as the remix with 50 Cent's "In Da Club." But this is a newer version, with different beats. A good track when I first heard it, I'm not feeling this one. Maybe because the In Da club version was off the hook. But it's a decent way to end the album.
So what do we have at the end of it all. 19 massive tracks, in what is surely a nominee for album of the year. There's no bhangra in here, only hip-hop and rap. But this is precisely what Bohemia is. He reps Desi Hip-Hop, and does it loud and proud. His flow remains constantly top-notch throughout the album. The only drawback, it's got 4 tracks which are basically just conversation, or talking. But regardless, you'd still find it difficult to find a Punjabi album now days with 19 tracks in it.
Every track sounds tight, the productions sound fresh, and Bohemia 's taken Punjabi rapping to a whole new level since his debut album. At 10 pounds per CD, I definitely think it's worth it. If you're not into bhangra, but are proud Punjabi brought up in America/UK/Canada wherever, you'd relate with this instantly. And even if you're not into hip-hop mixed with desi, at least give this album a listen, and then be the judge. I'm definitely feelin' the album, and give this album a massive 8/10.
