Death Jamm 5: The Final Chapter
..or so we thought! Envy/Roma had us all fooled as they have added Death Jamm 2004 to the classic series of albums! The album features the likes of Lil Sach, Dj Stin, Dr Zeus, Sound Ministry and Desi Underground. Noticeable absentees include Dj Sanj and Dj Swami who featured on Death Jamm 5. The number of singers used has been kept to a minimum, but they aint too bad. We have DSI (Bhangra Vich), B.Matewaria (Dhol Cutz 2), Master Rakesh and Lehmber Hussainpuri. Altogether we have a pretty good selection of producers and singers on the album.
It has been 4 years since the last Death Jamm album, from which bhangra has evolved greatly moving away from sampling every single hip-hop track around to creating individual and original beats. Let's see if Death Jamm can keep up its reputation and create another modern classic.
The first track on the album is Soneh Lengeh Waliyeh, produced by Lil Sach and sang by Karan MC. This is a heavvvvyyyyyyy track! This track is desi without being too old school and modern without being too kalafied, the balance is perfect. I must admit it does sound a bit similar to Das Ja; it has the same kind of dhol and tumbi mixture. In fact if you play an Acapella of Das Ja on top of an instrumental of this track they fit perfectly, I suppose this is bit disappointing that they sound so similar but I'm just happy a hip hop beat has not been sampled! The lyrics and Karan Mc's voice complement the contagious beat of this track so well! When this track was played at a recent bhangra gig at my Uni the place went crazy! This is one of those tracks you can't listen to without getting up and shaking your ass! It's an excellent track and definitely the best on the album.
The next track is Uddeh Mitran De, produced by Dr Zeus and Dj Stin and sang by Lehmber Hussainpuri. Personally I think Dr Zeus is the best producer in the bhangra industry behind the RDB boys and it is a shame he did not get more tracks on the album. This is an ok track, nothing particularly special. When listening to the track you can feel more of Dj Stin's influence, as it is more old skool and it is hard to feel Zeus's effect on the track as a whole. But overall, it's nothing too bad but nothing outstanding that we have come to expect from Zeus.
Bhangra Poa Mitro is the third track on the album, produced by Lil Sach and sang by B.Matewaria. Before I even had listened to the album I noticed this track straight away, after Yaari Jatt De from Dhol Cutz 2 I was looking forward to see what B.Matewaria could offer with a recognized producer like Lil Sach. But after 6 seconds into the song, my heart sank as I heard the beat of Lumidee "Can't Let you Go" kick in. I had honestly though bhangra had moved away from sampling and away from showing what good beats hip hop artists can produce rather then what bhangra producers can produce. However, past my initial disappointment the actual tack itself is really good. The way the tumbhi is played in the intro is sick, and the lyrics go well with the Lumidee beat. Don't get me wrong this is a excellent mix, but bhangra aint like this anymore, Lil Sach and other talented producers should put their efforts into making their own music rather then ripping off other peoples.
Sound Ministry's contribution to this album comes in the form of the Boliyan on the album that is sung by Lehmber Hussainpuri and Anjuman. With many Boliyan tracks these days, they all seem to be old skool lyrics with a hefty b-line in the background. This track is a little different to the norm; it has been produced in a way, which keeps it sounding old skool especially with the use of the flute. The Mc, Sugar Hill does a decent job on the track giving it a modern flava. I don't particularly rate Sugar Hill but you gotta give credit where it's due! Overall, better then most Boliyan tracks nowadays but still nothing special!
I personally had never heard anything from Desi Underground before this, the only time I had seen them was from the Tenu Bolundee video. Their track on this album entitled Dil Wali Gal is sang by Master Rakesh. When the track starts the singers, quite harsh/hard voice seems odd against the mellow tune and quite frankly sounds kinda sh*t! I wasn't gonna bother listening to the rest of the track, but once the beat kicks in Master Rakesh's voice sounds less harsh and starts to suit the more up tempo beat. This track has an r'n'b without trying too hard to be, we don't have some next apnay trying to sing like a usher for instance! Also this isn't a complete gals track, you can play it your gaddi without getting rinsed by all your boys! Nice lyrics, nice beat makes this a quality chill out track.
Dj Stin is one of the new comers on the Death Jamm Series with his track Gabroo sang by D.S.I. If you were hoping for another dance floor smash like Bhangra Vich from these two artists
.think again! This track is confused, it's neither here or there. It's too slow to dance to and too harsh to kotch to. Both Dj Stin and D.S.I are good artists but this kinda track tarnishes their reputations. I could rinse this track silly, but I wont! Just skip past it if you buy the album!
Inspekta......never heard of him and now I know why. His track on this album is sooooooooooooo bollocks (even worse then the Stin one) that I ain't gonna bother saying anything about it. All you gotta know is
it's sh*t! (p.s the track is called Na Jahvee just in case you were bothered!)
After two very disappointing tracks we come to the last one, Saag Tor Di, sang by Lehmber Hussainpuri and Anjuman and produced by Lil Sach making this his third track on the album. This is such a heavy track! When you listen to the beat and the way the lyrics are arranged you can tell it's been copied from a very old bhangra or hindi track that I cant quite remember! But anyways this has a certain Boliyan vibe to it
I mean proper Boliyan! Good song to play when dancing with people from older generations or people who appreciate proper bhangra. Straight up this track wont be to everyone's taste, perhaps too skool for some but personally I think this track is deadly, and both singers and producer deserve much praise.
Overall, they should have stopped at Death Jamm 5! This album is a mere shadow of its predecessor and I really hope they don't make any more Death Jamm's after this! The man who makes this album half decent is Lil Sach; out of his 3 tracks on the album 2 are brilliant. If the same formula used in Death Jamm 5 was used here i.e. Zeus, Sanj, Lil Sach and Swami then you almost guarantee a hit album. My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it! On a final note, you are paying for 3 songs when you buy this album: Soneh Lengeh Waliyeh, Dil Wali Gal and Saag Tor Dil, so roughly about £3.33 a song which is a rip off! I give Death Jamm 2004.
5/10 and that's only cos of Lil Sach! |
