Desi.Com! That's a heavy website address innit? Not as good as Desitunes4u.com mind you! Let's not get it twisted I aint reviewing no joey bhangra site, this is the latest album released by Music Memories. What makes this album unique is that it is a compilation of the best songs from Music Memories artists from the last 18 months or so, kinda like a greatest hits joint. I hadn't heard about this label at all till a couple of weeks ago, but they have some alright producers on their label: Nav Sarao, Dhol Cutz Krew just to name a few. Anyways you all know the procedure by now let's get the ball rolling!
No Intro! Did I ever tell you how much I loved Music Memories!?! Haha!
Right, well you know how I said this was like a greatest hits album? Well I lied! This song is actually a new one! The album kicks of with a track called Gerra and from the forthcoming album by Maninder Bawa. The production is by Harvey Sahota; you might remember him as half of Punjabi X! The track starts of with a little sample from Sean Paul's "I'm Still In Love With You." Now when I first heard this track I was like what is this but after a little while it grew on me and now I quite like it! The production is kept very simple which suits Maninder's voice very well. She has quite a mellow soft cosy feel to her voice, which I like and the melodious beat compliments it well. Overall a nice little chilling track!
The next track is produced by Joti Dhillon and features the voice of Soni Pabla. The track starts of with an intro from what must be one of the worst MCs I ever heard! I just pray all he does is the intro! Allowing the MC, who by the way does reappear on the track (just my luck!) this is a boom track, the beat is nasty, it is a bit "garagey" but fused well with the dhol, plus the crescendo of the beat doesn't last an eternity! A universal track, I can see people raving and cotching to it, yeah I really like this track!
Track 3 is by new best friend Joti Dhillon, it's called Koka and Sukhdev Darapuria features on it. This track has a completely different vibe to it from "Gal Dil Di," its pure desi! Desi.com, it does exactly what it says on the tin
Errr ok ill stop cracking jokes, anywhoooo, this track to me has a Naag feel about it! Again a very simple beat, which I think, is the key to a good hardcore desi track, excellent production, fantastic dhol and tumbhi.! Like I said very desi, but a bit tired and I dunno it just feels like we have heard tracks like this once too often! A little bit slow for my liking but not bad!
If say to you Dhol Cutz...now now calm down you can dance to it after you have the read the review! Haha! That's the reaction I see whenever this track is dropped, Dhol Ute Dagga, Kuldip Manak, Dhol Cutz Krew. Need I say more? Perhaps one of the biggest dance floor anthems of the last two years, definitely up there with the likes of Das Ja, Soneh Lenegeh Walieyh etc. Wow, what a track, a simply contagious beat, trust me boys and girls no one is sitting down whenever this track is dropped. Only a voice like Kuldip Manak could have sang on this track, quality with quality. Kids, Parents, Grandparents, even old bibis wave their walking sticks to this tune! A simply awesome track and definitely on my all time favourite list.
Nav Sarao! Name ring a bell? Well he did a an album on which Panjabi Hit Squad featured called "Fast and Furious" and this next track "Hara Lage Na" is taken from his own solo effort "Ik Pal." Ill give Nav Sarao a bit a of leeway as "Ik Pal" was produced in 2003 and the whole garage thing was still in bhangra, although this tack aint your typical two-step garage mix. This track is slow and fast at the same time if that makes sense? It ain't fast 2 step beat which climaxes and drops into a heavy b-line, yet its neither a slow mellow track. Errrrr, yeah it's a bit confused like Irfan! This is one of the better tracks off "Ik Pal", but still I cant help feeling that's its neither here of there. Nah not feeling this one bit.
Surinder Shinda has a fantastic voice as iterated on this track, production however is lacking. This song sounds too loud and too busy, the dhol beat is good, but there is another beat crowding it out and ruins the sound. Man, if you got a voice like Surinder Shinda at least put him on a track with a top producer! As with Koka, very desi but a little bit faster. This song would do well in India and with older generations, but as far as today's generation it doesn't offer much at all.
Taz Dhillon is the next artist to be featured on this album and his track "Aja Bhabi" taken from his album "Final Playback" takes up the number 7 spot! Now we all know this is an old skool classic and when dealing with these tracks you have to very delicate as they're fragile! DJ VIPS proved that you can re-release classics and be successful, however this track has been handled clumsily. The production is fine but Usha Kiran's voice is sh**! She sounds like a cat being strangled! In fact I reckon if you actually did strangle a cat (which we here at Desitunes4u.com HIGHLY recommend you don't!) it would sound better, at least the cat could hit some notes! A classic track ruined!
"Teri Sadi" is the eighth track on the album, again from Taz Dhillon and from "Final Playback" and again a re-release this time of a Bally Jagpal track! Amar Arshi features on this track, haven't heard from this brea in time! This has a definite early 2000 feel to it, garagey and deep B-lines! No way as good as the original but not a bad effort, Amar Arshi the previous "slut" of the Bhangra industry (replaced by Lember) sings really well on this as standard. As far as re-releases go this was fairly good for it's time but now seems a little dated perhaps? But overall it is a mediocre effort.
The next track "Nachne Nu" is taken from the Dhol Cutz 2 album and is sang by Balwinder Matewaria. Both Dhol Cutz album's were one hit wonders, Dhol Utte Dagga and Yaari Jatt De from 1 and 2 respectively, the rest were poor as is this track. This is very desi and I'm sure a lot of purists will like it, but it doesn't do anything for me, it just leaves me flat and empty. Balwinder's voice is quite good but what this track lacks is a decent hook, without a good hook a track is half way to being a flop!
Shall I tell you what I don't understand about bhangra artists? How they can produce one absolutely brilliant track on an album and the rest are so below par. Take the 10th track on this album, Nav Sarao producer, "Ik Pal" album, "Gal Sun" absolutely brilliant track. This tune is heavy, the best on the album behind Kuldip's Manak. Soni Pabla again provides the vocals, but allow the vocals, the tune and quality of production is quite exceptional on this track. The tumbi is sick, but the way the beat is intermittent throughout the tune is quite brilliant, the crescendos are sick the production as a whole is top shit. Soni Pabla's voice really suits this track a lot; there is fantastic catchy hook. Overall a really really top tune.
"Tere Nal" is the 11th track on the album, again taken for Dhol Cutz and sang by Balwinder Matewaria. Like I said before the whole of Dhol Cutz 2 was a flop apart from one track, however this is perhaps the next best one from the album. The hook is definitely better as is the beat, not so raw this time. Yeah it's all right, but as for putting it on an album for the best tunes from your label, someone really went wrong!
The last track is taken from Punjabi X's first and only album simply entitled "The Debut Album." The track "Kudi Punjaban" is both produced and sang by Harvey Sahota, and it definitely has a Sahotas sound to it although I'm told there is no rishtadar there! The production is again very light and simple, similar to that of "Gerra," the chorus is very catchy and it's a nice little number. I think this kinda soft mellow beat suits his voice well. This is like a sing-a-long track, easy words and simple meaning which is good for those whose Punjabi ain't the best (me included)! Quite a good track!
One word to describe this album would be "premature." I think it is an excellent idea to create a compilation album of this sort, EnvyRoma have done a similar thing with EnvyRoma.Com (Is it the fashion to put .com after your title or sumat?!), however one thing you need is material and hits. If say Untouchables or Moviebox were to do something like this it would be great as they have a stream of albums and hits behind them to make a really good album. Music Memories however lack resources. Taz Dhillon, Joti Dhillon have all only released one solo album and Nav Sarao has a couple to his name. Dhol Cutz Krew have 2, and Harvey Sahota and Maninder Bawa have yet to release solo albums. I think each artist needs to release 2 if not 3 solo albums if a project like this is to be undertaken. Even with the release of Dhol Cutz 3, Harvey Sahota's and Maninder Bawa's albums due soon, there is still a severe lack of material.
Don't get me wrong there are 3 top songs on this album (Dhol Utte Dagga, Gal Sun, Gal Dil De) with the two Harvey Sahota tracks not bad either. But on an album of 12 tracks with only 3 being top is that acceptable for a compilation of the best tracks from a label? We might expect it of a solo artist's album but not this. Perhaps if they were to do desi.com part 2 in a couple of years we would have a high quality album. But for the mean time I suggest Music Memory record more music or they will simply be a memory! Not a bad album at all, 6/10. |
