DJ Sanj's
Hype

Here is the latest in the long line of Sanj productions, the conveyor belt keeps rolling and the endless array of track keep arriving. Sanj has been involved in many 'ok' tracks without really setting the market, in England anyway, on fire. His name is familiar to most but that's about as far as it goes.

It starts with track 1 Gabar Singh v's Big B (or is it an intro, certainly doesn't say anywhere) and I use the term 'track' very loosely indeed with respect to this. It basically a lot of self-indulgent praise heaped upon none other than himself. Ok, so it's the voice of Big B (Amitabh), big deal, what does he want? A blue peter badge? It doesn't make any sort of statement, infact, the use of Amitabh to promote a totally different genre to that he's associated with defies belief and to put it frankly is absurd. To be honest though, I can imagine the reasoning behind it, but still doesn't excuse the poorness of it.

Number 2, Babulla, to the well trained ear, it's a typical Sanj Track, right down to the composition and bass, and in typical Sanj fashion an unfortunate mismatch between music which is, to his credit, well executed as usual and the lyrics and singing. Never really going to make an impact with a track with lacks a catchy chorus and/or lyrics to which people can associate, such is the market at the moment. Returning to the music again, it is well composed with a strong bass element, which is almost mandatory these days, not bad.

Das Ja, is number 3. It's a nice simple tune both in term of the music and the singing. Fulfils its purpose in the context of the album, to provide a 'desi' 'back to the roots' feel. Not really much more I can say without being over critical.

Sajana Ve Sajana is one of my favourite tracks, but unfortunately not this version. It's a track I put on when I'm in a reflective chill-out mood. Admittedly this slower version adds to this reflective feel but lacks that certain spark which brings a track to life. The music is however refreshingly compatible with the music adopting a 'less-is-more strategy which works well. Without doubt the lyrics have a certain appeal, which cannot be ignored, which ultimately makes this track in whichever version, very listenable.

I'm a fair person, one pile of shit, which bears absolute no purpose to anyone buying the album (namely Gabar Singh Vs Big) I can put up with, after all no-ones perfect, including the self proclaimed 'Americas Number One'. (By the way you, ain't fooling anyone with that shit bro) but 2 out a total of 6 are scandalous by anyone's reckoning. 'Hit song Hit song' is some talking recording live in a club. It's about as interesting as it sounds, trusting me.

At last, something in the album, which cannot be criticised - Tenu Bolundee remix! The temptation may be to think 'oh no, not another remix' but this isn't an ordinary remix (probably as its not done by some kid on his pc with some poor excuse for DJ software thinking it sounds good, having absolutely no idea that it will sound different on a Hi-Fi compared to the 20watt speakers on his computer) If you thought the original was good, think again. I defy anyone to argue that this version isn't superior to the original not only in terms of composition and layout but more importantly to the industry as a whole, in mainstream potential. If you need a track to get a party started, this is definitely the one.

This is followed by the last tune, which is an instrumental of Tenu Bolundee, which is a complete waste of space on the cd. I mean who listens to instrumentals? Not me and nor do many people! Just another album filler, enough said.

I think I don't really need to say what I think of this, that's probably a good thing as it prevents me getting a lot of hate mail from the wonderful people representing Mr Sanj, or, if I'm really lucky, from the man himself. The one thing I will say is that I'd has been less devastated losing £10 than I was after buying this rip-off. The only real dilemma needs to get hold of the Tenu Bulondee remix. Rather than advising you to buy this especially for that track, there is a much better solution which isn't going to leave you thinking 'what a waste of money', buy 'Urban Explosion', it's on their as well. I later found out that the EP is available for as little as £4.25 on the net, which shocked me. On this note I would like to congratulate Envy pricing it accordingly but they made a fundamental mistake in not putting the RRP on the CD, which just means shops, like the one I bought it from, are gonna charge £10 for it. I urge all labels to follow suit but make sure you put the RRP on it! I think Sanj suffers from producing music in such vast volumes; other artists seem to concentrate their efforts on fewer tracks, which usually are of better quality. The talent is without question, using it to its maximum potential is the problem. I can confess that I've even lost the CD in the house somewhere and I couldn't care less if I find it. Overall, I'd give this cr*p a shocking 3 out of 10 based on the fact that I paid the full album price of £10 for it. This effort was exactly the opposite to it's title of hype so I just hope his forthcoming album 'American Desi' has more to offer.
