Jassi Sidhu's
Reality Check

Having split from B21, Jassi Sidhu finally releases his debut solo album. For a time I thought maybe Moviebox will name it 'Long Overdue Part 2' but it's here so let's stop complaining. Jassi gives his reasons for the delay in an exclusive interview with us. The album is named 'Reality Check' which is a message to all those who are living a life above their status, basically telling you to keep your feet on the ground and take a look at themselves. Below the album title it says 'more than just a postcode' which is a message to B21 (named after a postcode). Now it's time to find out how good Jassi really is as an artist. Has he got what it takes to do it all on his own? I guess it's time to reveal all!

The album kicks off with 'Agg', which instantly brings back memories of B21. It has a desi feel to it like all the classics from the group with the modern feel to it, I can't describe it but B21 fans should know what I mean. Lyrically it's a top tune, which has been brilliantly sung and produced by Jassi. All in all it's a top start to the album.

The song called 'Veer The Viyah' follows this. As soon as I heard this song it reminded me of the tune 'Deor Da Viah' from B21's hit album 'By Public Demand' back in the day. It's not a carbon copy but has a similar sort of beat to it. Overall, I'd say it's a nice mix.

Onto track 3 which is 'Ama Ni Ama.' This tune flows at a good tempo and is lyrically sound. The track has been well put together and Jassi's voice shines through again. The only complaint I could have about this one is that it is slightly repetitive but at the same time this repetitiveness is what makes it simple for the listener to sing after. Another class tune.

'Pyar' follows this, which is Jassi's attempt to slow it down with a romantic number. However, I'd have to say that this is probably the weakest effort on the album. It just seems to be something lacking. Using a friend's terminology to describe the tune, he said Jassi seems out of tune and I'd have to agree with him as the music and vocals seem out of place slightly. It's far from the worse tune I've ever heard but it's below average.

Track 5 is the remix of 'Agg.' It has been mixed by the man of the moment 'Rishi Rich.' It features the very talented rapper 'Mentor' who you may remember from the Pure Garage series. The mix is very different from the original as it has a more modern feel to it with the strong desi element taken out. The music is class from Rishi as you would expect and Mentors rapping is very good. It gives you a nice alternative from the desi vibe of the album.

Moving onto 'Chargay Jawani', which brings the MC twins (Metz & Trix) back from their exile since they left Untouchables. It's not as if it's been recorded recently, it's more a case of it taking so long to release as mentioned earlier. The track is like a mixture of Jawani (B21) and Sonie Ni Sonie (Sahara). This has to be my personal favourite as Jassi smashes it with the vocals and the deadly duo from Manchester gives us a glimpse of why there are still the best in the business. It's one of those tracks that will be played a high volume in car stereos for a long time to come. As a rude boy would best describe it as a 'sick' tune. All credit to Jassi and Jim Latunsbury for they combined effort on the production on this one.

Onto track seven, which is none other than 'Nain.' It's back onto the desi vibe with a well-put together track. It's a desi as you going to get it, trust me. Jassi keeps it simple and again the lyrics are top notch. Overall, it's another good tune.

Moving onto the next song, which is the remix of Pyar (track 4). I've got to say that this is superior to the original as it's been speeded up and it just seems to flow much better. It's another good tune, which is significantly different to its predecessor.

Onto the penultimate track, which is another remix - this time is the 'live' mix of Chargay Jawani. Jassi opens up with the lyrics 'Jassi Sidhu is back again' which just shows what a class voice he has. I mean for someone to sing it the way he does with minimal music in the background and making it sound good is evidence of his amazing ability. This version has no mc'ing and it has been replaced with the guitar. It's a top mix, which again is very different from the original. The music is used sparingly with the guitar to great effect to allow Jassi's vocals to shine through in style.

Onto track 10, which is called Ranja (original name?). You could forgive Jassi for coming up with album filler here but no way. Talk about keeping the best till last! It's one of those tunes that you need listen to a few times to get into it. I just have to say the production and singing is nothing short of amazing. All credit to Jassi for this wicked desi tune.

So what has the album given us overall? It's given us 10 tunes, which is more than what most albums have these days. The ten does include 3 remixes, but as I explained earlier these were very different from the originals and were not album fillers with just a couple of beats or samples added. On that issue, the album is 'sample' free which shows originality. Lyrically, the album is full of very meaningful tunes with all credit going to the unsung hero's, which are the songwriters which in this instance are Sukhi Tandi, Davinder Sangha and the king of all song writers Dev Raj Jassal. Jassi has not only sung all the tracks on the album but it's fully produced by him as well (except 2 tracks). It also has some nice videos to go with the tunes (not the usual club/girls/cars style video) so all credit to Moviebox for them. So overall has it been worth the wait? Hell Yeah! It's has proved to all the doubters that Jassi is a very talented all round artist. Overall it's very desi album in the main, which has originality, quality and variety all in one. Mark out of 10? I'd say 8.5! So if you haven't already bought the album then I have one suggestion, buy it!!
