Manak-e's
Darr

Yo! This Rocky reppin Vancouver, Canada…. droppin a review on the latest offering by Mr. Hor Glassy - Darr! We've seen Manak-e hit us with many club anthems such as Hor Glassy, Jee Karda, and Paisa. Manak-e returns with what is said to be his best bhangra album ever! Production credits go to RDB… (of course), Aman Hayer, Kam Frantic, and the new kids on the block… Sangra Vibes. This album not only features an all star production crew, it also features the vocal talents of Chesire Cat, Lehmber Hussainpuri, and Kuldip Paras.

Now the first thing I noticed about this album compared to 'Paisa' was that there was no intro! Amazing! Mr. Manak-e you get an extra point for that!

The first song kicks off with the instant hit "Yeah Yeah". This track features the vocals of Chesire Cat… Now I'm not too much of a fan of Mr. Chesire Cat, but in this track he sounds great. His voice goes with this song…really rare to see with Chesire! The song is great, the lyrics are incredible and Mr. Manak-e sounds incredible! The bass lines flow strumming instruments in the killer dhol. A track that you'll definitely play over, and over again!

This is followed by 'Lut Ke Laigee' which starts of as a very desi offering then increases in tempo all of a sudden. A quite typical untouchables track with pretty repetitive lyrics. It's like the song is 1 minute long and it repeats itself about 5 times to make up the track with little substance bar the repeated chorus.

The next track saves the dignity of this album! I guess coz RDB isn't anywhere to be found on this track! The standard 'Boliyan' is brought into play with the rookies Sangra Vibes on the controls. This track features Lehmber Hussainpuri, and Kuldip Paras. The track kicks off with Manak-e giving an intro to the singers and Sangra Vibes. Now, before I get going, Sangra Vibes contributed in the 'Paisa' album, and then released the speaker pounding "Unleashed" album which featured a couple offerings by Manak E, Now they return with their incredible, musical genius to lay down boliyan. After Manak E spits his bit to the mic, Lehmber comes in with a heyk. Passes it off back to Manak E, and then over to Kuldip Paras. I hadn't heard much of the guy before hand but I hope to hear more of him. What a unique, and very desi voice! Love it! The track ends with a duet of Lehmber and Manak-e. This track is a true dance floor shaker! It will have you singing along without you knowing it! Lyrics are original, and man what a great match up of voices! Excellent Track!

"Dhol" is a real shoulder shaker. Has a crazy dhol going to it, but the beat is very typical for this type of song. I don't know whether to call this a filler or not, I'll let you be the judge of that one. The one thing I really like about this track is that the lyrics are different for this type of 'typical' track. But the recycled music just really turns me off.

The next track is the title track… 'Darr'…. I remember when RDB visited Vancouver, and played this track long before it was released… as much of a haze that night was… the lyrics of this song were engraved in my head! Maybe I'm not the commitment type?? LOL "Asee ni karma pyaar sanoo dar lug dah" I'm guessing the musical contributions were contributed by RDB… it sounds like the boys are giving back ups in this massive track! This track's much faster upbeat compared to the first track, and the lyrics are unreal! Manak-e's done a job well done on his vocals. It flows well with the track.

Next up we have 'Kushian Part 2'….. oh god. I must admit I listened to it for about five seconds and then I skipped to the next track. This is a definite filler track. sounds recycled, and that voice that keeps interrupting the track and telling "everyone on the dance floor to come on" - wrecks this shitty track… and I really didn't think this track could get worse. What's with artists releasing the same old songs over and over again? Honestly? STOP IT! We have enough "Kushi" songs; if you really want to come out with another 'Kushi' song, PLEASE find different lyrics… there are hundreds of songs with the same lyrics as this track! Verdict - FILLER!

Next up we have 'Na Ni Karnee', which has the return of RDB, and Cheshire Cat.
Seriously Cheshire does not sound good in this! It's like he's fighting to get on the mic! You can barely make out what the guy is saying, and to make things even more complicated, his rhymes are completely different from this track. Other than Chesire's annoying presence… this track is pretty decent. The lyrics are impressive and the Tupac sample that they have going in the background works with the track. Manak-e sounds great…wish I could say the same about Cheshire…actually I don't…. he sounds like a crack head with Down syndrome. Going back to the use of a sample; it's the first we've picked up on from Untouchables since Sanj's now infamous unauthorized business. RDB need to realize that sampling is now a risky business with the BPI keeping a watch on desi music and no matter how they try to hide the sample people that listen to the music will pick up on it!

Next we have 'Kan Vich Gal.' This is a nice simple track with, what sounds like Sangra Vibes…unless my ears are mistaking me…, but anyways, a very nice track. The lyrics of this song are original and the tune has a nice flow to it. Not to fast, and not to slow. Reminds me of "Changa Ni Lagda' from the 'Unleashed' album (as far as production is concerned) perhaps a bit of recycling is going on, but hey it works for me!

'Aja Mahi' is my favorite track on this album! This track is different from the rest of the tracks on this album. You're brought into a whole different genre of music. We have a Qawali style song, a real rare treat that you don't often see on a bhangra album! It's got a nice beat to it, and the lyrics are just touching. Manak-e really showcases his voice throughout this track, especially at the end of the song. (He really brought the high pitch down a few notches) 'Aja Mahi veh udeeka menoo teriya' A pretty impressive track!

"Kaun Nach Di" is next in line. A very upbeat song which sounds like it has an influence of Aman Hayer. I like this song; it's an upbeat and fun song which will have you singing along in seconds! The lyrics work, and Manak-e sounds good. It's a track that will have all the Aunties shaking their laffy taffy!

The albums slows down a bit with the penultimate, 'Ik Pal', which has a very deep and dark bass line to it. The beat is crazy. I love how they've tampered with Manak E's voice. The bass line is nutty, I guarantee you'll bump this track in your car, I know I do! The lyrics are nuts! Manak-e does an impressive job on this track! Ik pal beja, bejaaa ni akay mitra deh kol!

The final spin on this album is, 'Dil Diwana' which really slows down the tune of this album. It's a real treat… this time we're given a different language. Manak-e showcases us his Hindi singing ability. I really like this track; the lyrics written by Manak-e himself are quite impressive. For those of you that understand this track, you'll love it. It's a nice ballad of a track. Its no "kawan" in comparison, however, it's different. 'Menoo lok sharabi kehtey hai, na janay kyaa meh peetha hun" Love it! For those that are in heart-ache you'll love this track!

Darr has a wide variety of musical talents contributing to its success. First and foremost I'd like to give a big up to Manak-e for venturing into different styles of music and giving his fans something out of the ordinary. This album gives you 12 tracks on which Untouchables have tried their best but can't help doing some repetition and recycling on it here and there. The CD covers credits 'Untouchableuk.com' as the producer of the album - can some please explain to me how a website produces songs!! There is no credit for any of the featured producers which is wrong; sort it out! You can see that the overall quality of Untouchables albums has steadily declined since they burst onto the scene a few years back and you can see that the overall investment [budget] on each album is clearly dropping. I score this album at 6.3/10 for the solid lyrics and vocals more so than the production and originality which could have been much better.
