Ms Scandalous's
Ladies First

Ms Scandalous first full album is simple entitled "Ladies First." The first lady of Panjabi Hit Squad blew up on the desi scene, when she blessed the track with the Hit song "Hai Hai" featuring Satwinder Bitti of the first PHS album called "The Streets." Her sexy style, and lyrical skill, has allowed the West London MC, to rise as one of the desi scenes top female MCs. Now few years past and various Hai Hai mixes later, we finally get a taste of "Ladies First", lets check it out!

It kicks off as most albums have with an intro. I am neither here nor there when it comes to intros. This one is simply Ms Scandalous answering machine, and various people leaving messages biggin her up as well as dissing her! A straightforward intro, that leads into the next track.

Track 2, is the heavily played track Aaja Soniya. I'll be honest, track has a good beat, the vocals of Jaspinder Nirula are good, and it's a good party track. And Ms Scandalous does a good job providing some punch line lyrics. My only complaint is that the beat pattern has been used many times before, and kind of gets boring after awhile, but nonetheless it's still a bangin tune. Many people have likened the structure of the track to Dr Zeus's 'Ah Ni Kuria' and you can see why as Ms Scandalous even says 'drop the bass' at the exactly the same time.

This is followed by the track Spread Love. First off the production off this track is sick, PHS and krsstyles do a good job of providing a nice tabla hit, with the breakbeat. The background vocals by Alyssia provide an excellent feel of the tune. Ms Scandalous provides some really good lyrical content for the track. I must admit, shes one of the few Asian MCs male and female that actually provide some real good lyrical content. She talks bout spreading love, and provides in depth personal experience and her flow throughout the track remains concise. A really classy and well made track, something both males and females can vibe to.

Next up is a song called Jus Talkin. This is on the heavy drum and bass garage type vibe. Ms Scandalous rhymes bout her style etc. An overall nice track, but far too short, its only 1 min and 21 sec. However I must say the track displays her ability to flow on beats at different tempos, and for many MCs that's not something they are good at, however she displays she can hold her own on the d and b flex.

We come to track 5 Gal Sun, The song is blessed with the vocals of Alyssia who I think does a valiant job of providing strong vocals throughout the track. The production is quite good, on a very r n b desi feel. However most of the track is Alyssia, and Ms Scandalous only comes in this track at the odd time, this is your album girl you gotta shine on every track! Although I wish she had more part in the track, it's a good chilled out track, perfect for any mellow moment, as the vocals and the MCing both mesh well.

Sajana features the vocals by Jaspinder Nirula. Now it's a nice bumping tune, but is purely a filler for the simple reason, that Ms. Scandalous is nowhere in sight on the track. In my personal opinion, I think this track should have been left off the album because it's meant to be the Ms Scandalous album and she has no part in this track. The inlay proves that she did not write the track, did not produce the track, did not provide the vocals, did not MC on the track, basically she did not do absolutely nothing to it; so someone please explain to the what exactly is it doing on this album?

Now on to track 7 which is entitled Ladies Anthem. The track is again on a deep garage drum and bass flex. Lyrically it's on point, but for an anthem it's far too short, the track is a min and twenty seconds. It can be considered more of an interlude, than a real anthem.

Don't Rush is numero eight. I must say this is my favorite track on the album. Ms Scandalous talks of a girl named Rani and her tragic young life. The production is quite crisp with a breakbeat and tables in the back ground. The message of not rushing is eloquently conveyed my Ms. Scandalous, as her lyrical content uses her own personal experience as a means of advice to the listener. I think a lot of UK Asian MCs can take this as an example that lyrical content is much more effective than just yelling nonsense ABC rhymes. Her flow is quite concise, an overall excellently put together track, both on the production and lyrical end by PHS, Krrystyles and Ms Scandalous.

The next tune is entitled Put Ya Hands Up, now this is definitely a club banger! The beat consists of hard bass line, with claps, and definitely gets the dance floor. The lyrical content is and flow is safe. My only criticism, is that Ms Scandalous voice should be raised, as I find the vocals in the hook should be a little louder. Overall though a smashing track, that will definitely get the ladies bumping and grindin on the dance floor.

The Last track is entitled Summer Breeze. The beat is quite up-tempo and is on the garage / 2 step vibe. It's a nice up beat track, and Ms Scandalous talks about the summer, and all the good things involved with it. It's a well put together track, however like I have said again, I think the vocals in Scandalous' hook should be raised, to add more affect to the track, I find that her voice in my instances is drowned out the by the bass lines.

Now this I think in my experience I have seen an album from a female desi MC that has been put out. The first thing I must say is a mad prop to Ms Scandalous. In an industry mostly dominated by men, she has held her own as an artist to put out an album that is very much lyrically a reflection of herself. The content in this album although not extensive because there are only 7 tracks (excluding the intro and 2 interludes) it is very detailed and lyrically well put together. The production is mostly done by PHS and krrstyles who do a valiant job, with of course the help of engineer and the well-known bhangra producer Kam Frantic. The biggest complaint about this album is that it's over produced and sounds too manufactured overall. For those who say MC'ing in the desi industry does not work, I think this album worked quite well to provide a good dosage of hip hop, garage, bhangra, and two step all in one album. I think the fear of the industry is actually taking a risk on signing MC's with real lyrical talent instead of just being hype people on tracks with Punjabi vocals on it. I hope to see albums from other MCs both male and female, Ladies First provides a glimpse of an album that puts Ms Scandalous in a position to talk of real life experiences, rather than just yelling out random rhymes. Although I found the album short, it provides a glimpse of what type of sound we can hear from an album that is able to blend desi and MC'ing elements into one full album. Ladies First I would say is a good album, because it provides that type of vibe. I give the album 7.1/10 which is a good effort by Ms Scandalous who not only represents for the female MCs, but all aspiring Asian MCs, as her album provides a stepping stone, for labels to invest money into Asian MCs, as they can provide a good musical blend of experience, and thought to various genres of Asian influenced music. Although Ms Scandalous has a half decent flow she seems to pause after putting together a series of words. She will need to improve in this department if she's going to be taken seriously by the mainstream but I suppose she has age on her side.
