SK1 recently released the follow up to his debut album 'Sugar Shak.' This new album is appropriately titled 'Xpressions'. For many others, and me SK1's debut album 'Sugar Shak' was one of the surprise packages of last year with the smash hit track 'Tera Style'. The album was packed full of tunes, a number of which impressed me. His debut album was released on Fantronic Ltd and T-Series. Fantronic Ltd and Zee Music have released his new album. SK1 'Xpressions' features eight brand new killer tracks written by very famous writers from Pakistan. Anyhow, the hype for SK1 Xpressions had been built up, and it was finally time to see whether SK1 could once again deliver the goods.
The title track Gawand, produced by JKD has a slight different feel to it from JKD's usual stuff but has a refreshing old school feel to it with the essential party elements Dhol and more dhol! The song 'Gawand' is a follow up from the song 'Tera Style'. The song is about the Girl next door. Watch out for the video on Zee Music where some of the video has been shot at Destiny Night Club with a good storyline. There's a heavy baseline. All in all it's a heavy track.
Next up, a true garage number named as Dhoka, I was really looking forward to this tune. This track has the raw underground edge that UK garage truly represents and flows well with MC Nas T who is at his best. It's a phat track and probably the best track on the album. Watch out for this tune blastin out on all D radio stations.
Onto track 3 which is 'Tere Bina.' This tune flows at a good tempo and is lyrically sound. The track has been well put together and SK1's voice shines through again. This song has pretty nice lyrics and the background music is ok as well. Overall it's an average song, but nothing special.
Onto track 4, which is,'Akhiaan'. SK1's voice seems very relaxed in the song and the whole composition oozes of funky house and tantalising beats. The flow is quite similar to another song but I can't quite put my finger on which tune it is similar to. Some of the lyrics in the song are written by SK1 himself, credit going out to Akhtar Hussain Akhtar and SK1 for this track, the beat is quite good. It's one of my fav tracks of the album.
Next is Nach Di. It's one of those tracks that will be played a high volume in car stereos for a long time to come. The tone of voice really accompanies the music well and shows that SK1 is truly a top vocalist. It's another quality tune.
Moving onto Track 6, which is called Chor. It's a funny song talking about a girl who stole SK1's heart. The lyrics are top as you have come to expect from SK1. It's a cool song with funky lyrics. However the song is quiet fast, which spoils it a bit in my opinion.
Track 7 is Boliyan has speeded up to an almost Drum N Bass tempo. Nice pop sort of garage blends. It's a very desi track - complete 'Hoye Hoye's', Overall, the track is more than just average.
Onto the final track Eidaan, begins with a very traditional beat. The beat throughout the tune remains at a very traditional level. I think the tune is quite good and defiantly lets the listener know why the album has been named SK1 'Xpressions'. It grows on you after a while. This song is a follow up from SK1's song Lagiaan that was a smash hit. The song is sang very well as I would say it's another good song. The track has a nice video to it (not the usual club/girls/cars style video).
Overall this album is more than just Xpressions, it's a serious musical collaboration featuring the best of uk Bhangra music, JKD, MC Nas T and not forgetting the man himself Akhtar Hussain Akhtar all form a lethal blend of musical madness. Who said Pakistani singers where dated. SK1 proves to all that it's not just the northerners who can make good UK Bhangra music with loads of MCs and garage, the East Londoners can too. SK1 has come back again with an album, which is going to be loved by the masses for a long time, its well worth the wait. Lyrically, the album is full of very meaningful tunes with all credit going to the songwriter, which in this instance is Akhtar Hussain Akhtar. It also has some nice videos to go with the tunes so all credit to Fantronic Ltd. Rating out of 10? I'd give it an 7, as there is a nice blend of variety with everything from love, pop, dance, desi & garage all on their combined with some quality production. SK1 is defiantly the Bomb. |
