Soni Pabla's
Gal Dil De

Well Hello Again! This is Rocky dropping another album review from Vancouver Canada. Today we'll be looking at the Toronto based singer Soni Pabla. Soni Pabla is out with his latest album under Genie Records (Planet Records in North America) "Gal Dil Di" with production by the music man himself Mr. Sukshinder Shinda. Soni Pabla has been featured on various albums in the past including Joti Dhillon's 'Behind the Scenes' and 'Just Us' by Nav Sarao. The album cover… it's a picture of Soni wearing sleeveless shirts… umm… err…. I don't know what he's trying to flaunt :S

The album kicks off with "Dil Tera" which is featuring Indian Miss and Cheshire Cat.
The beat is an east-meets-west beat… with a flute chirping around in the background. Another well-crafted Shinda beat. The lyrics are nice, and Soni sounds great!

"Panjaeb Yaar Di" is the second track and right when you hear the first 2 seconds of the track you know you're in for a very desi flavor. This track is a huge hit over here in Canada. This is the kind of track that brings a smile to your face when you sing along. Very catchy chorus, awesome music, and the voice compliment's the song very well… I love the last verse! 'sirh-oh- pairi-nangi- pajah jah keh ehdey val chuli - sagal edhi kudak paveeeeehh!' - Brilliant!

Next up we have "Hasna" which features Cheshire Cat. It starts off with Cheshire Cat doin' his intro to the track. The beat transitions back and forth between a desi and a heavy bass line. A massive track!!!! This is one of those tracks you'd just bump in your car…

Track Four is 'Boohey Vich' and you're brought in by a tumbi and a heavy dhol. This track has that desi flow to it. The lyrics are awesome, and Soni's done a great job on the singing. A very, very desi track…

"Punjab" is the fifth offering. This is a nice and slow song. The lyrics are just heart breaking… the track is about a girl reminiscing about her life in Punjab. If you can understand the lyrics, you'll like this track, if you don't like it, I'm sure your parents will.

Track six is "Hauli Hauli Chal" which means, "Go slowly", and in all honesty this track isn't really "going" anywhere at all. It's a very pindoo track, and will probably appeal more to the older generations, but as for as I'm concerned - I wouldn't even wipe my ass with this track. A filler…maybe? I think so!

The seventh track is "Pyaar Diyan Chithian." This track has a very different, slow sound to it. Very nice, slow and smooth beat accompanied with amazing lyrics, and a great voice. This is a great track to listen to when you're having a 'peg'.

- Speaking of 'pegs' - Track 8 is "Pehle Torh Di Daru" for those of you true desi's out there you'll love this track! I know I do! This track has great lyrics and its fun to sing along to. The beat sounds a bit…. well… recycled, has that pindoo beat to it, but hey, you can't expect Shinda to come out with a fresh beat for every track.

"Talli Jeha Ho Lain De" - Now that's a good idea! This track could have been waaay better! The lyrics are impressive, but the beat doesn't live up to the potential of this track. I love the lyrics though… the chorus especially! "jeh nachan dah lehna nazzara, menoo talli jeha ho lain de" hai, hai, hai,

"Main Nahi Rakhi Behna" is the last track on this…. album. This is one of those 'oh bale, oh bale, oh shava oh shava' songs. This one will definitely get you going on the dance floor… Great track, great lyrics and a nice desi rhythm.

Gal Dil Di is a very desi Bhangra album. This album has a treat for every type of desi listener, from those that love there heavy bass lines, to those who love there bhangra purely desi. The production is excellent (with exceptions of a few), but all in all Shinda has once again proven that he can launch careers, and this album has definitely shown the potential that Pabla has to offer. Soni Pabla has written 3 tracks on the album, which is rarity these days so deserves some credit for that. Plus I rate him for giving the other songwriters proper coverage on the inlay, as they are the unsung people of bhangra who rarely get the credit they are due. From young and old this album should delight all those in your family. For those that don't understand the lyrics, you'll love the first few offerings in this album, but for me this is album is definitely worth buying so it gets 7/10.
