Sumeet's
Deeper

Sumeet has had a bit of a mad twelve months since bursting on the scene with her dancehall smash 'Agony.' This was one of the most hotly wanted yet unavailable tracks of 2004 and now the singer from Canada via New York is back with her debut album 'Deeper.'

Put together independently in the main, there is a great array of production talent on here including Djinn and Brukkout Entertainment. The number of production outfits used gives it a good variety to the music, which incorporates R&B, soul, reggae, dancehall and urban street beats.

The album begins with 'Agony', Sumeet's main track to date which features bashment supremo Elephant Man. Sumeet is on fire with the sing-along chorus. A real dance floor filler with its soca elements this is a great start.

The reggae element continues with 'Wine Me (2 Da Ground)', a more mellow track with production element from the boys at Brukkout who also produced the opening track. Another top tune which you'll hum the hook to but its nice as its not too in your face and it all comes together rather well.

Then we hit a true R&B vibe as Djinn comes onto the production tip. 'Connection' is a dreamy tune about, the chemistry between lovers, musically under pinned by a steady tabla beat. One to listen to with the missus, but like all three of the opening tracks it's a wee bit too sexual as Sumeet tells us to 'skip the foreplay', which I think is a little out of place in a tune which could've been a great love song.

Track four is my favourite tune on the album, called 'Love Goes On'. The R&B base is topped by a bhangra driven chorus. Perfectly put together by The Godfathers (Djinn and Tom Linden) I can't fault this in any way. It's an absolutely impeccable vocal performance by Sumeet with great use of adlibs and it just sits inside the music coming through at points to show the girl's talent.

The next track is 'Rush' which slows down the pace but still keeps your hips moving. Produced by Dave O'Donnell, there are some great elements like the beat boxing, but the lack of a melody means something is missing. The backing vocal is nice and Sumeet's voice is sultry but it just lacks that something in the treble.

Number six is 'Can't Wait To See You (I Really Miss Your Style)' which is a beautiful modern soul song and another highlight. With some great lyrics this is one that makes you think and not take love for granted. The key change near the end is a little off, but it doesn't take the shine of another perfect vocal performance.

The next track comes from a Logrithmic and is a bit of a drama joint, entitled 'Ride Or Die'. Its gothic organ and groovy beat show a different dimension to what we have been hearing to make a nice refresher. The music takes a little away from Sumeet's vocals and unfortunately the lyrics are a little uninspiring.

Tempo remains higher for the next tune, 'On'. I really liked this one, a flirty and sexy track where the sexual element works well. It's an a typical production from the Brukkout guys; with much less of a reggae component but it's a great R&B track.

'Ghost' is number nine, and is another high quality modern R&B tune. This is my favourite track for its lyrics, its got great imagery and is sung really well. It's in tracks like this where Sumeet begins to give an impression of vocally being a bit special as it's not an easy type of song to just get up and blurt out.

The tenth track is the title song. Unfortunately, 'Deeper' the album is much better than 'Deeper' the song. Despite some excellent lyrical content, the music just hasn't got the spark to make me want to listen to it.

Djinn returns for production honours on 'Get On Your Feet', which he raises the pace a little. It's got good inspirational lyrics and is a collection of stories told through the lyrics with each verse a different tale in a style similar to Eminem's 'Guilty Conscience.' Sumeet's fast singing is great and the way she gets the lyrics out is prime. The production is typical of Djinn, an urban styled groove and this is another of my favourite tracks on the album.

Track twelve is 'Secret', with the reggae vibes coming back and Deva Bratt appearing for a verse of dancehall splurt. I'm not really feeling this, the scratching is cool but the chorus gets repetitive.

Number thirteen is 'You Blew It (C'est La Vie)', a scornful track about a cheating lover. The mismatch of a slow, rolling b-line against some quicker vocals and a steady beat in the middle and it doesn't come together too well. The lyrics are emotive but Sumeet's voice lacks the bite, which makes these types of songs amazing. I guess she's too much of a nice girl ;-)

The next track is called 'Pushin' On', and sees Brukkout back in the technical zone. It's a great story about Sumeet's trials and tribulations in the music business, and it's a well-put together song in just the right place at the end of the album.

'Deeper' returns to the surface with the Hot Curry remix of 'Agony' by Sanam Recordz and Nick Chowlia who replace Elephant Man with little known desi singer Harv Singh. Now there's not been much desi element to this album and apart from the two tracks early on by Djinn you might have forgotten that Sumeet is desi, but this is bang on. Dhol, tumbi and that same great voice falls into place perfectly and although Harv Singh may not be famous, his input works brilliantly. Mad track and it would've been a crime if it wasn't included on the album, and at the end of the day, bhangra is much more important than Elephant Man!!

There's not much wrong here considering budgets, first attempts and all that, and if there had been a bit more experience and money I think the weaker tracks would have been cut. But the positives far out weigh the negatives and the highlights have altitude. Djinn's input is superb and he takes credit for three of the six quality tracks on here. I'm going to give Sumeet's 'Deeper' an 8.3 out of 10 for her efforts, and they deserve no less, the girl has worked hard to put this project together.
