The Senator's
No Way Out

The Senator returns with his much-anticipated follow up, No Way Out. Nothing To Lose, his debut album, was a huge hit with tracks like Sona Sona, Dowain Jaanian and Hass Hogia. The Senator displayed his talents by mixing the tunes with all types of music - R&B, Garage and Drum n Bass. However, it was debatable as to whether it the quality of the songs on the album, or the production that contributed to the success of the album. The main reason this point was brought up, was due to the fact that the only song that wasn't a hit prior to appearing on his last album, Koka, being far less than impressive. Anyhow, on this album, The Senator has again tried to stick with the same formula. This time he's used a couple of old Bombay Talkie tunes and introduced a new singer called Sonia Panesar.

The album starts with a dhol instrumental with samples from Dre's 2001 being used for the billionth time in a bhangra tune. Give it a rest now guys, everyone knows Dre's a master but there's a limit to how many tunes you can bring out recycling his stuff. The tune is well produced, however.

Akhian Billian is a song by Sanjay (Bombay Talkie). It's an old tune, and The Senator's not done anything dramatic on the production side. It starts with quite a dark Hip Hop beat, but then goes into a lively desi bhangra beat. An average tune, nothing special.

Naina (Part I is the first time we get to hear the vocal talents of Sonia Panesar. This girl's got a wicked voice. Again, it's an old song. This song also appears on the album, Ice, but the voice of Sonia is far superior. The beat The Senator uses is a slowed down version of 'Forgot about Dre', with samples from the Dre also being slotted in throughout the tune. A good tune - well sung, well produced and nice lyrics.

Chargie is an old school Bombay Talkie tune. Again, The Senator hasn't dramatically altered it. MC Magic says a few English words, reminding us who the singer is, who produces it and who he is! An average tune again.

Kulli is another Sonia Panesar tune. This time the Senator's laid down a Ma$e beat to be sung over. I like his use of the dholaks in this tune. Another top tune with good lyrics and good production. This time The Senator inserts a few 'Bad Boy' samples - courtesy of Puffy. Sonia really shows promise. I think the big step for her, will be if she can come up with some original material?!? There's no questioning her talent.

The Senator's Jam is this albums 'Senator Vs Dholi X' It's another dhol and tumbi instrumental. A good tune. Well produced, with the help of DJ Loop and Aman Hayer. There are various samples used throughout the tune.

Naina (Part II) is the garage version of the tune. MC Sniper features in this 2-Step version. Again it is well produced and the vocals again, obviously, are wicked. This tune's got a nice B-Line. The MCings good as well. This version is more MC orientated, with less of Sonia's Lyrics. This song works well with both beats, have to say it would be hard for me to choose between the two.

The outro is some good advice to other producers. Anyone thinking about releasing an album should really take note, makes a lot of sense. Exactly what people involved in the bhangra industry should be thinking about.

Overall there was obviously going to be comparisons made, after such a brilliant first album. However, I feel this album is very different. Not because it isn't brilliant, but because it's not packed full of dance floor smash hits. This album is a lot more chilled out. There are dance floor numbers, but I think the real highlights of this album are the Sonia Panesar tunes. A good album nonetheless, I give it an 8/10!
