Dr Zeus, DJ Stin & DJ Swami's
The Slayers

Envy has released an album with 3 of their biggest producers. After achieving their own solo success, with various albums, the 3 contribute a couple of tracks each towards this album. I feel this is a good idea because often the production in an album is too similar, so it is good to have different producers.

The album kicks off with Charka Chanen Da, a track by Dr Zeus(?). It is typical Dr Zeus production, which is good although it is all very similar and is gonna to get very old fast, if he's not careful. Sooner or later he's gonna to have to try something new. The production is similar to Gwandian Da Dhol. It is still a nice tune nonetheless.

Nach Sadenal is the second track. This is the produced by DJ Stin. This producer is a very 'desi' producer. The production is not over the top, as is so often the case nowadays, and the traditional rhythms are still apparent. However, I feel the singer on this song needs to improve. It is a very desi tune, something people of the older generation may like, but i felt this song was quite weak.

Bhabiya uses the De La Soul 'It ain't all good' sample. Again I feel the singer lets the song down. Not exactly a smash hit. The production is all right, but i feel sometimes some of the traditional beats have to be removed for the western audience.

Patola sounds like another Dr Zeus produced song, with his trademark rewind scratch, and sampled gangster rap lyrics. Again, it is a good tune, but again typical Dr Zeus. The singer is good.

Gidhe Vich is a very traditional song. There's nothing special about this tune. It's mixed into a dubaholics garage beat (Jaheim - Just in Case), but for this to work I feel the traditional music needed to be filtered out. Don't get me wrong, I love traditional bhangra, it's just some producers try to please traditional and western audiences, and end up pleasing neither. The singer is very traditional. Quite an average tune overall.

Udham Singh is normally always a good tune. This is a garage version, continuing the 'bhangarage' trend i have previously talked about. Vocals of Group Therapy's 'East Coast, West Coast' have been added. The lyrics are, as for most Udham Singh tunes they are excellent, and the production is all right.

Overall the album is quite average. It won't be one to rock the bhangra industry, but is still better than some of the other weak efforts being released nowadays. It is quite a short album, with only one tune breaking the 4-minute barrier. I give the album a 6/10.
