Urban Flavas Volume 1

Untouchables UK release a compilation album, entitled Urban Flavas, with tracks from the likes of RDB, Metz & Trix and Indy Sagu. The album is mainly RDB, as they have produced half the tracks, but there are a host of other producers as well.

Dil Karda is the first tune on the album. The video of this one has been playing on the Asian music channels. It is sung by Gubi Sandhu, and features a new MC on the scene called TIPS. It starts with Punjabi lyrics and a basic garage beat. Then the bass line drops with TIPS MC'ing. His MC'ing is good but repetitive. The format of the tune is basically alternating between Gubi and TIPS. There is nothing special about the Punjabi lyrics and the ending just makes me laugh, he bigs up soo many people all at once, are you sure you didn't miss anyone out? Some people love this tune, but I think it's just average.

Track 2 is Dekh Jawani. Illegal Demo is behind the production for this one and these boys are Lyrical Rider, MC DC, MC Ruthless and K18. Again it's what I like to call a Bhangarage track. The Punjabi lyrics are speeded up and at first this sounds a bit odd, but you get used to it after a few plays. The beats good - an original garage beat. The MC'ing is good, with a number of MC's, so it's not repetitive unlike Dil Karda. The vocals are by Darapuria, but can't judge his voice because of how speeded up the lyrics are. Still, quite a good tune nonetheless. Looking forward to hearing some more from these lads.

The third track is Dhol Vajda, produced by The Lethal Dholis. It's a traditional track, with vocals by Manak-E. The music is just basic Dhol and Tumbi, even though at times the tumbi sounds like an old skool west coast beat. The production is good. The lyrics are more of the usual stuff, nothing exceptional.

Track 4 is another change in music style - in the words of Metz 'drum n bass mixed wit bhangra.' It is produced by RDB and features Metz and Trix, if you hadn't gathered. The MC'ing is the usual Metz and Trix business. You've probably heard some of the lyrics before, but it'll be a bit quicker, because it's Drum n Bass. It actually sounds like it's been speeded up in parts. The bass line is heavy, and the lyrics by K.S. Makhan are well sung, although his voice has been synthesized. Quite a good tune overall.

Bhangra Punjabavay is the fifth track on the album, and it's produced by RDB again. Again TIPS is the MC. The vocalist is the main man, Amar Arshi. Again, he provides a top voice to a tune. He's definitely the highlight of this track. The beat is a bit raga-ish - don't know exactly how to describe it. At times the MC'ing again sounds like it's been speeded up. Not a bad tune.

RDB live band is the interlude, even though it is over 3 minutes long. This is basically the RDB lot doing some Acapella stuff. This is what I'd call an album filler and I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously - at least I hope not. It sounds like when your uncles all get together after a few glassiay singing some boliyan, with a bit of tumbi and dholki in the background. The lyrics are funny, but maybe RDB should stick to producing music.

Daru, track 7, uses the addictive beat - knew it would only be a matter of time. The MC's on this one are LP and Kocky K, who appear courtesy of DIY mob. The track is about getting drunk, as the title would suggest. The vocals are by Kuldeep Purewal, and are quite average. Not a particularly bad track, but not really above average.

The 8th Track s produced by a new name in the industry, it's DJ H (Pure Napa) from London. To my knowledge it's an all-new line up. The MC is J Maka and the singer is Sanjay Dhariwal. It's a bit of a bhangarage track, but a melodic one - even though there is a nice bass line. J Maka doesn't really MC, but just kind of talks, doesn't show any rhyming skills on this one. This is a top tune - good beat, nice vocals. Looking forward to more from all parties involved in this one.

Tera Thumka is the Lethal Dholis second track of the album. At the start there's an MC in the form of MCP. It's a lively track, sung by Mehsopuria. The music is good - traditional vibes. Mehsopuria's done a good job on this as it has a nice beat to it. This is better than the Lethal Dholis other effort on the album.

Balay Tera is the 2nd interlude and is just 30 seconds of someone laughing, saying Balay Tera at the end. This shouldn't even qualify as a track.

Comedy Boliyan is track 11. It is produced by another new name, De Jav. The production on this one is interesting because it's got a bit of a so solid type garage influence, but has also got some traditional instruments playing at the same time. The combination works quite well. The vocals by Jagtar Sheri are a bit different, and sung fairly well.

The final track of the album is the Indy Sagu's remix of Patlay Patlay - the Surjit Sagar tune from RDB's debut album. This is a drum n bass remix. It starts off with the Pulp Fiction beat, from the Jungle Mania album. Then there's some tabla beats and MC'ing by MC Koppa & MC Damaga. The MCs sounds like proper live jungle set MCs. This is followed up with more of the Pulp Fiction beat mixed in with the Helicopter beat. Surjit Sagar's vocals then kick in which everyone would have heard before. There's more MC'ing before the Punjabi lyrics run to the end of the tune. This is a top tune, and will go down a treat with all old skool Jung list fans.

Overall, I'd give the album an 8.5 out of 10. Not every track is good, but there is enough variety in the album to appeal to the majority I think. This is mainly due to it being a compilation album, with a number of different producers and vocalists. It is no wonder that bhangra albums are often short. When it comes down to it, the longer albums lack ideas and there is repetition from both singers and the producers. The best part of this album is the fact that it's brought so much new talent into the industry. As to whether these artists will be able to bring out consistently good albums, we'll have to wait and see. The only complaint I could have is that a large proportion of the tracks feature Mc'ing which you are gonna love if that is your kinda music but for those people that simple dislike Mc'ing will not really like this album but maybe that is the style they wanted, hence the title 'Urban Flavas.' Having said that a big well done to untouchablesuk another class production.
