XLNC's
Forever

This latest offering from XLNC is yet another attempt by them to try and break into the more mainstream bhangra, something which they haven't achieved for a while now. In their case the motivation is even greater due to the departure from the band of lead singer Harbhajan Talwar. Will this one bring them the success that crave and in so doing, prove their critics wrong?

It kicks of with the track Dil Lagda Nein Tere Bina, this is undoubtedly one of the best slow songs I've heard for a while. Every aspect of this is technically and aesthetically perfect. Firstly, the music is well-composed R n B feel to it and the focus is not on the bass, which leaves the focus to be left on the vocals. The track is well sung and the electronic enhancement on the female voice is not overpowering and not overused which is often the case in other tunes. The actual lyrics are strong are meaningful a fact which is probably enhanced due to, as previously mentioned, the music allowing emphasis onto them.

The 2nd track is Lal Dupattey Vali. This tune is ok, but it's got a feel of song from an Indian film. Admittedly it tries to disguise this by the addition of a few extracts from "It wasn't me" and a few scratching sounds but when the chorus kicks in you can just picture some guy singing with 100 dancers behind him all wearing the same outfit. That's enough on the discrepancies in Indian films, back to the track in question. Its sort of a feel good track and I can see how some people would like it, but just not me.

Onto track 3, which is called I'm Sure. It is sung, if that's what you call it, by Cheshire Cat. Personally I would prefer to hear just the background music alone, granted the guy has got a unique voice but the lyrics have no depth and don't grab you. The music is in typical style but its nice and upbeat, it could have been used to better effect on a different song.

Next, theirs the track Dil Vich which is one for all you old schoolers, an old style song sung in typical style with the usual dhol accompaniment. Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure loads of you are into this sort of thing.

Then we get remix number 645 of Tappe! How many versions of this can you get? Firstly it was released by Sahara on the album Purely Nachural 7 named 'Tappe Remix' and then it was copied by XLNC on their last album 'Jus Chillin' on which it was called 'Tappe Part 2' and now again on this album on which it sounds like a mixture between the two songs mentioned! However, to be fair the format is a classic and you can't argue with classics. Most songs sung in this format are pretty good. The music is something we have all heard many times, rhythmical bass which speeds up rapidly upon reaching a chorus.

Moving onto the sixth and final track namely, Golee Mar De. This again is the sort of tune more Indian pop than anything else. The annoying gunshot sounds accompanied by sentences which are half in Hindi and half in Punjabi really make this one to skip. The lyrics are very average again with no real kick.

This album lives in the shadow of the first track which; to give them some credit would stand out in any album. No other track even comes close to matching its quality. They say every cloud has a silver lining and the first track is certainly the silver lining on this otherwise below average album.

The downfall on this album is that the group have never really moved on from their original work and due to the rapid evolution of bhangra they seem to have been left behind. I agree with the argument that every band has their unique style but unique styles don't necessarily sell albums, making the music you want and making the music people is two different things. I don't know if they are targeting certain sort of people to aim their music at or maybe they are exploiting a gap in the bhangra market, but I think that gap doesn't exist, or if it does, the numbers are rapidly diminishing. I think the album lacks originality and considering the fact that it only contains 6 tracks - I would rate it at a poor 4 out of 10.
