Hey there, it's Nizam once again and I recently caught up with the Bhangra Knights, who stormed into the desi scene more notably providing music for the Peugeot advert soundtrack. I recently caught up with them to discuss their entrance into the Music scene as well as their future endeavors.
Nizam: First of for all those who don't know who you are, just give us a little info about yourselves?
Jules: Bhangra Knights was formed by myself Jules Spinner and for the first singles Raul has been a key part, providing lyrics, vocals and MC'ing when out on the road at gigs and performances.
Nizam: How did you lot get into the music scene?
Jules: Started going to events like the rocket on Holloway road and the fitness centre and telepathy and raindance etc back in the day.

Nizam: The Peugeot advert was a huge success for you guys, how did you guys hook that up?
Jules: Sampled it in true house style, someone bootlegged it with a white label everyone started playing it. Took ages to hook up when the publishers heard it they didn't want it they thought they had their own version, but EMI came knocking on my door and eventually they were forced to come to the table and do a deal. |

Nizam: When the advert soundtrack hit the airwaves did you think it would be such a huge success?
Jules: Er yes, knew it was going to be massive, such a great advert, the head nod makes it and the musical loop the original producers made was great.
Nizam: You all are set to release "Fascinating Rhythm" which is being pressed heavily on the UK airwaves, and is quite heavy I must add, its a re-work of the William Orbit produced track, how did that come about, and what's the reaction that you've been getting regarding the track so far?
Jules: Well anyone can do a cover, so we just cracked on with it, we've had loads of great reactions from specialist radio people, we think it could cross over big time but we'll have to see how daytime radio respond.
Nizam: For the single, Fascinating Rhythm, you did a remix competition via the Adil Ray show. What the thinking behind that? Was it as successful as you had expected it to be?
Jules: Yeah it was great we got a cracking remix from Mr Fricktion that I really love, also Jay Dahbi did a really good mix more on an Asian tip, but in the end Fricktion just clinched it, much thanks to Adil for his hospitality, I think the whole comp stirred up some talent and got the audience involved with voting for their favourite record so it all turned out good!
Nizam: As a DJ and MC in the group you both have been influenced by the cultural sounds of Indian music intertwined with House, and other forms of electronic music. Artists such as Talvin Singh have used similar concepts, do you feel this form of music is a wave of something to last, or do you think that traditional Indian sounds mixed with electronic forms of western Music, will slowly die down?
Jules: I really have no idea, I hope it will last, it has been really exciting for me, but I guess people are always looking to new stuff to excite them and whether they find that in India or elsewhere is anyone's guess really?
Nizam: What makes Bhangra Nights different from any other group?
Jules: The music, no one had ever crossed over a house/Indian hybrid into the UK Charts before.
Nizam: As a group you have garnered international fame and success in Asia as well as Europe, with the success of the advert soundtrack, as well as your distinct sound as a group, do you plan on hitting the North American Market more aggressively in the near future?
Jules: Well that would be great, the company that owned the rights for the worldwide after our deal tried to sign the track there but asked too high a price for it, so in the end there was no deal
which is a shame, but if anyone reads this and wants to put the record out come and let me know and perhaps something can be worked out between everyone?
Nizam: You guys have performed in many different places around the world, is there any specific places where you guys performed that really stood out?
Jules: Russia we love, Kazakhstan was craaazy, Estonia we really enjoyed the first time we went, South Africa pretty cool, were really lucky to have been to all these places and to be offered to go again, fantastic privilege.

Nizam: The Music scene is growing immensely with talented Asian artists and groups, is they're anyone in the Asian and also even in the mainstream industry that you lot would like to work with?
Jules: Panjabi MC for the potential we could achieve, we have already worked with Malkit Singh on the Punjabi Daze track that you will soon be able to download on Napster, outside of this were open to offers for sure.
Nizam: Will you guys be touring anytime soon in the UK and abroad?
Jules: Were just doing things date by date at the moment. |
Nizam: What's next for the bhangra knights? I mean what else have you got lined up in the near future that we should know about?
Jules: Just trying to get this single on the runway and then looing at collaborations and more making music really, Raul promises me he has some solo material in the pipeline, and we will probably be working further with Harry also the singer from Fascinating Rhythm.
Nizam: Finally, do you have any final message for the thousand of desitunes4u followers worldwide?
Jules: We love you all, check out www.bhangraknights.co.uk for more info and www.beatport.com for downloads.
I want to thank the Bhangra Knights for taking their time out to talk to us, be sure to checkout "Fascinating Rhythm" which will be releasing on September 27th, 2004.
