Recently, Naima had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming stars on the desi music scene at the moment, namely 'Big Suga Kane.' He now has his own record label and is ready to release another monster 15-track album. He has worked on the scene in both Canada and the UK.
1) How long would you say you've actually been in the music scene for? Is it
something you grew up with?
Naw didn't really grow up with it. I started about 5 years ago in Canada, I just used to make mix tapes, and remixes for my friends and the local music shops.
2) Is there any one in particular your music is aimed at? I mean you know is
it for the clubbers, chillers, flexers, schoolies, aunty and uncle ji's?
Yo this 15-track album has something for everyone on it. But on the whole it's always been about the desi hip hop heads. For the ryders who appreciate a phat cd to ryde to. But the older generation is gonna love it 2, cause we got an unreleased Kuldip Manak track, from 1981, which he recorded in his prime! Basically it was lost and just discovered last year, and we bought it.

3) What made you want to set up your own label as opposed to being promoted
like many of the other talent out there?
Cause that is wot I was advised to do, by many of the top artists in the industry, sorry don't want to mention any names, as these artists are still with their respective labels. I had the finances, and the contacts, everything was there, so we was like, let's do it. Plus now I can showcase Canadian and American talent to the rest of the world. Cause believe me, we got some heavy un-signed artists down there.
4) What do you think of the use of samples in Asian music these days?
Nothing wrong with it! People in the UK need to stop |
| crying about it. What's wrong with it? People wanna hear it, so we gonna do it. |
5) In the long run what key words would you like people to associate with yourself and your record label?
Phat.
6) What made you move from Canada to the UK?
I was born in Wolverhampton, but moved to Canada when I was 3. I spent most of my life in Canada, and that's my home, however, I've got nuff family in the UK, so I've always visited. And now with the label, I'm just back and fourth.
7) How do you think the desi music scene out there, Canada, differs to the one here?
Yo that's not a question that can be answered in the time we have right now, cause it would mean you writing for pages. But to keep it short, basically there isn't much of a scene down their, its really weak. We don't have big bhangra gigs and that, only when artists fly down, and that's like only every 3 months. And that is only like one group.
8) Do you have any words of wisdom for all your up and coming fans out there?
Yeah you wanna sign wit a label that will be good for you, and not gonna f*%K you, then come sign wit Suga Kane records.

9) Whose is going to be featuring on your new album? I mean what should we expect from it? When is it releasing?
This album features probably the biggest line up of the year! With new tracks by K.S. Bhamra, Kuldip Manak, Ranjit Mani, Gurdas Mann, Surinder Shinda, and many others. We also got the talented HMC on a heavy Garage track. Some of the new producers on Suga Kane Records are also on the album, DJ DIPPA, DJ HMD, DJ SUNDSHINE, and DJ DNY, these are the biggest producers/dj's in Canada. Releasing April 13th 2003 |

10) I know you are into your clubs from your time at Leeds, how often do you
go out these days?
Well I'm living in Leicester now. I don't go out much, as I'm too busy wit the label.
11) What do you think of EP's on the desi scene at the moment, I mean do you
think it's fair to charge the bhangra listener £10 for 4 songs? What is your opinion on the matter?
Yo I think the fact that we got 15 tracks on our album, plus a free dvd, with 10 of our videos, says it all! And yeah, it's the 1st time that a dvd as ever been released wit an album, so watch for the industry to be shaken up. We're not hear to rob you guys, Suga Kane Records gonna be giving yall value for your money, so you don't have to look to download the album off the net. Cause believe me the DVD is HEAVY, shot in Canada, not 2 B missed! We've also done one of our videos' with the only Desi Playboy Bunnie, from Playboy Magazine, and believe me she is HOT!
12) Do you have a final message for the thousands of desitunes4u visitors all over the world?
