Recently Khalid caight up with Big Suga Kane to talk about what he's got goin on with no holding back as per D4U standard!
Khalid: Ok for everyone that doesn't know, introduce yourself.
Big Suga Kane: I go by the name Big Suga Kane. I'm one of the owners of Suga Kane Records. Still the only Desi Record Label based both in the UK and in North America. I have been doing this for about 4 years now.
Khalid: It's been a while hasn't it since you've dropped an album as an artist?
Big Suga Kane: Yeah my last album as an artist was Desi Platinum back in 2003. Since then we showed our diversity a long with trying to give artists a chance to shine. We dropped a few albums since, Labh Janjua's, Bad Boy Squad's, and Code Red's (formerly Sound Ministry) who was stuck on Envy doing America Most Wanted compilations. Our last album "West Coast Desi" was truly a revolutionary Hip Hop album as far as Desi artists are concerned. With that album we introduced the world to the likes of Deep, Bohemia, D'Luscious, Underworld Ent, Kurupt and a bunch of other rappers from Suge Knights's Death Row. Since West Coast Desi, everyone now is coming out with their Asian RnB/hip hop album/mixtapes. (Laughs) But yeah your gonna see a lot more REAL hip-hop and RnB coming out from Suga Kane Records in the near future.

Khalid: Ok wicked, so now Big Suga tell us a bit about your new album First Blood?
Big Suga Kane: First Blood is out now. It's a double CD featuring over 30 tracks. Disc 1 you got your Panjabi bhangra, on hip hop beats. Disc 2 however is strictly mainstream hip-hop tunes, the kind of stuff you'd buy at HMV. The album features Labh Janjua, Ranjit Mani, Binder Bajwa, Sarbjit Saab, IceBurg, Elephant Man, and a bunch of other talented artists. If you like hardcore desi vocals, hip-hop, or heavy baselines you'll love this album. There's tracks on there that will just eat up your subwoofers. Definitely an album you can bang in your ride.
Khalid: Ok you know I gotta ask you about the beef with RDB, what's that all about?
Big Suga Kane: You know what its too long to get into here, but I recorded a track |

called "Bedtime Story" that explains some of it as everyone's been asking me about it so I thought I'd just spell it out one time, you can hear "Bedtime Story" on www.BigSugaKane.com |
Khalid: Nice, so what is this we hear about you retiring, is it true?
Big Suga Kane: Yeah I actually retired as an artist earlier this year, so yeah this is my last album. Not to get it confused with Suga Kane Records, the label is gonna continue to go on bringing nothing but heat in 2006.
Khalid: Serious? Damn why are you retiring, it appeared as though you were just getting started?
Big Suga Kane: Well you know I had my fun; I never planned on being an artist forever. I've always been a businessman first. I have some other new multi-national ventures that require my full attention and commitment.
Just wanna thank everyone though for all the e-mails and love. I've received a lot of e-mails asking me not to retire, some which have been very touching. So just want to thank all the supporters for those.
Khalid: That's great to know, cause as everyone knows you have a lot of haters too, why do you think that is?
Well first of all, a lot of it is from artists/dj's pretending to be fans. Other stuff is just from people that prefer their bhangra straight up, with no hip-hop. And that's cool; they're entitled to their opinion. We just offer something different. If you don't like hip-hop, then yeah your not gonna like Big Suga Kane (laughs).

Big Suga Kane - First Blood |

Khalid: What is your advice to any of these new artists/producers looking to break into the industry.
Big Suga Kane: Well I could write a book on that to be honest. One of the points I'd like to mention is be careful who your giving your money too. I see too many new artists trying to break in paying "industry people" for this and that, and never getting anything back, dreams being crushed over broken promises. For one, to all the new producers looking to get vocals, be careful who you are buying from, make sure you got your paperwork, and copyrights cleared. There's established producers in the UK going around offering vocals for sale that they don't own. If your gonna buy vocals, go through a label, manager or the singer themselves. Producers don't sell vocals, they have vocals that were given to them from labels and artists they were once working with and are now trying to pawn em off without having rights for them. For instance, I know some people |
|
been going around selling my Labh Janjua vocals which they have no rights for, so when the new producer goes to release it, the label/distributor asks em for paperwork and see's they don't have it or its fake, and the album never gets released. So just warnings don't get robbed, do your homework when buying vocals. |
Khalid: Ok, now its time to play the word association game. I'm going to say a name or word and you tell me the first thing that comes to your mind.
