Recently, Irfan had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming male singers on the desi music scene at the moment who the man behing the hit track 'Sah Rukh Dah' on the album 'Danger', none other than the one and only 'Gubi Sandhu.'
Irfan: How long have you been into the desi music scene i.e. how did it all start for you and what/who has helped you progress?
Gubi Sandhu: I've been singing since I was 13,I decided to take it seriously at the age of 16, I got In touch with a ustaad ji from panjab and he came to the u.k for 6 months to teach me, since then ive bin learning different styles of singing via teachers and experimenting different singing styles myself, my break came with "sah rukh dha" and that was thanx to my bro harry gill and untouchablesuk.com.
Irfan: Who is your favourite singer/producer?
Gubi Sandhu: Jassi Sidhu and Sukshinder Shinda
Irfan: In the Metz and Trix album you sang 'Sah Rukh Dha' which is a mad tune in my opinion and everyone else's! Did you get much recognition for that?
Gubi Sandhu: Thanks, I can't believe what 1 song can do for an artist!! I've had gigs, radio interviews, offers to sing worldwide, had excellent feedback thru email, internet, media, all this was made possible thru the management at untouchablesuk.com who really know how to promote their artists and push forward new talent into the music world.
Irfan: I heard you got a new album (Ounce Of Desi) releasing soon, so what should we expect from that (i.e. who's going to feature on it)? Also, when is it due to be released?
Gubi Sandhu: Well that's the working title but the title might change, its gonna have 8 brand new tracks all sung by myself, music will be ranging from desi to drum n bass and music will be produced by rdbdjs.com and lots more, I'm hoping for a end of year release but we will have to wait and see.
Irfan: The album is releasing on the Untouchables label, why did you choose them ahead of others?
Gubi Sandhu: Like I said before who else promote their artists more than untouchables? At the end of the day a artist wants to be recognised for his work and effort and this is only possible thru proper management and promotion that I believe untouchables offers. I believe that the only record labels in the UK that promote their artists are untouchables and metro music, look what the team at untouchables have done to rdb and metz/trix? They have been made household names over night!

Irfan: On the advertising side, Untouchables are doing a brilliant job promoting bhangra. Do you think that others could/should follow in the footsteps and take advertising seriously?
Gubi Sandhu: For sure, but I suppose theirs some labels that don't realise that you can only treat a artist like shit for some time before they make there name and jump the boat, I mean wats one or TWO posters on soho road going to do for a artist? What about the people that buy tapes and cds up north or down south?
Irfan: What is your opinion on the sudden influx of 4 to 6 track EP's (i.e. Untruly Yours & Ambersariya)? I mean do you think it's fair to charge £10 for 4 tracks? Personally, |
|
| I think it's a rip off and an album should contain at least 8 tracks, what is your opinion on this matter? |
Gubi Sandhu: E.P's are good idea for new artists that want to break thru onto the scene, then they will know wat was good or what was bad thru the reaction the E.P. got, instead of wasting a year on a album and wasting money that aint going to blow up, as for well known artists that make a e.p the price of a tenner for a E.P, is sickening, that's all I want to say cuz I can go on forever taking the piss outta this situation cuz that's wat I think it is, taking the piss, then they wonder why there's so much piracy going on charging silly prices for a 4 track E.P.
Irfan: Why do you think bhangra has yet to make it mainstream?
Gubi Sandhu: Make our own beats instead of ripping off samples from the mainstream might help. Do you see these mainstream artists nicking samples from each other?
Irfan: If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would that word be?
Gubi Sandhu: Unique
Irfan: What should we expect from 'Gubi Sandhu' in the near future?
Gubi Sandhu: My track 'Oye Hoye' from the new album by dj harmony" Club Panjab, 'Tappe' from the Singh Shady album and a few tracks on the new album by DJ Seduction and of course my own debut album, I just wanna say that don't expect album fillers from me, only phat tracks will be done by myself.
Irfan: Do you have a final message for the thousands of desitunes4u.com visitors all over the world?
Gubi Sandhu: Keep it real and keep locked on to the phattest website (desitunes4u.com) bringin you the latest tings! Thanx to everyone who has supported me and a big up to the fans out there who inspire me in my music and singing.
