Imran Khan recently headed down to the desitunes4u.com music store in Bolton for an EXCLUSIVE interview with desitune4u's very own Northern Dream Team ‘Usman & Irfan.' Here's what went down!
Irfan: For those of us that don't know give us an intro i.e. who is Imran Khan?
Imran Khan: Salaam, Namaste, Satsriakal. Hi readers, I would like to introduce myself as Imran Khan, a 23 year old Punjabi singer from Holland . My passion for singing started at the age of 12, with me always listening to Punjabi music, and it never stopped, hoping that one day people will listen to what I have to give to the Asian Music Scene. I never gave up my dream and believed that everyone has a gift from god and you should never give up, keep going until you achieve it.

Usman: As a new artist; what do you think that you bring different to the market?
Imran Khan: To the market I am bringing a new style of bhangra with a mix of east and west, this has been tried earlier also but we are bringing up a fusion which is creating waves in the hearts of young and old.
Usman: You seem to have created a new sounding style of music. It's different to anything I've heard anywhere. How would you define your style?
Imran Khan: I try not to use the traditional beats as it is and I am looking to create a new desi beat in a different style, something that is unique and has not been tried earlier, or should I say with not as much success as in the case of Ni Nachleh. The single was a preview of the unique experiment of a new style and once you hear the album you will know what this style is all about. |
Usman: How does it feel to be part of an elite group of artists to be played on mainstream music channels including MTV Base?
Imran Khan: I feel elated and honoured at the same time; it is a reward for all the hard work that our team has put in for making this album. In addition to this I see this as an international recognition of our desi music, and my talent as well. Coming in the Asian music scene as a new artist and achieving so much in so little time and also getting such a positive feedback. Having had the opportunity to be alongside some of the greatest artists in the industry, who have by far much more experience is a great honour.
| And this is a great inspiration for all the up and coming artists to make music as now they know that if it is good then they will surely make it.
Irfan: You are representing Holland to the fullest. How does that make you feel?
Imran Khan: It is an honour for me to hear that, but I would like to add here that I am trying to make a place for the Asian music industry in the places where it is lesser known. In addition to Holland our single has had a great response from other parts of Europe, like France , and Norway along with the other parts all over the globe.
The response, respect and the love that I have received for my first single has been an inspiration and a reward for me and for the whole of the team.
Irfan: The track ‘Ni Nachley' has been No 1 on many radio stations nationwide! Has the level of success surprised you? |

Imran Khan: It has been a dream come true situation for me, as it would be for any other new artist. To get such a huge and enthusiastic response from the crowd for the first song that you make is a great feeling. This is a special achievement of my life and I would like to thank all my supporters for all their love and support. I would also like to add here that as soon as the video was finished we had a sort a feeling that it was going to get a big response, but to see that it has been such a great success, it gives our team immense pleasure, our hard work didn't go fruitless.
Usman: Where is the strangest place that you have been recognised?
Imran Khan: On a beach, where there were no Asians. There were only Englishmen and people of some other ethnic backgrounds, but I was really very surprised that they were not only listening to my music but feeling it and enjoying every bit of it, and this answers your previous question about my style completely, I am trying to create a style of music for Bhangra where the music is enjoyed by one and all, it is a style which would attract everyone regardless of their origin or language.

Usman: These days very few Asian artists write their own lyrics. However, you do write you own lyrics! Do you think it is important to do so? What are your lyrics inspired from?
Imran Khan: Yes I do write my own lyrics and I think it is really important for an artist to write lyrics for his songs, because I personally think that if you have written it you have a feel of the song and you don't need to make any efforts to get into the lyrics while singing, it comes out automatically. We complain all the time of ghost production and I thought if I write myself I will be my own boss, I don't need people to write for me, I know it's hard but you can see the results are in front of you and I promise I will deliver more in the album. I co-produce as well and the album has one of the songs that I produced, but for this the credit goes to Eren E, a great talented person from Turkey , who in his own time studied the great art of bhangra and
Hakan Ozan
who also worked on the album. As far as my lyrics are concerned, I have been a great fan of the legends like Chan Chamkila. |
Irfan: You absolutely smashed it with you ‘live' performance at East London Mela! The new tune ‘Chak Glass' promises to be the anthem of the year. How did it feel to get such a crazy response from the crowd?
Imran Khan: The new tune is Chak Glass, again, any artist does all this for the audience and when you get such a huge response it inspires you to put in some more, to give them something more, and something new. This song is just a glimpse of the strong tunes that we have put in the album and this response gives me an even stronger feeling that the album is going to make it big and that all our hard work and talent will be rewarded suitably by our audiences and supporters.
Irfan: I understand that you have a video planned for ‘Chak Glass.' Can you tell us more about the concept behind that!
Imran Khan: We are trying to keep the video interesting, I cannot say much about it as of now, but it will be as interesting as the earlier one and different from the rest of the stuff, with a different concept, so keep watching for it.
Irfan: Your new album ‘Unforgettable' is looking huge! Tell us more about the album!
Imran Khan: The album is scheduled to be released in mid October, it will have 15 songs excluding the single Ni Nachleh, right now the only thing that I can tell you about the album is that if you liked Ni Nachleh, you will love the album, and it has a lot of variety for sure.
If you like the track Ni Nachleh and the mixes, you will love the album 100% love the album with all its different flavours and some very interesting features including Lucky and two more surprises. To buy album simple click here now. |
