Recently, Irfan had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming female singers from the desi music scene who sang that mad tune 'Dil Chura Liya' on recent hit album Panjabi Hit Squad, none other than the one and only 'Kavita Sohanta.'
Irfan: How long have you been into the desi music scene i.e. how did it all start for you and what/who has helped you progress?
Sorry to say, I'm not actually into the desi scene in a big way, I'm a big fan of all styles of music, I don't have a particular favourite. My whole family are avid musicians
but I would have to say my parents who were both singer/songwriters have influenced me the most in my endeavour to pursue a musical career. My Cousin Ameeth from Punjabi Hit Squad channelled my talents towards the desi music scene. Where I go from here remains to be a mystery - all I can say is
stay tuned!
Irfan: What else do you do apart from singing desi music?
Well, I'm actually a student (Won't mention the university). I'm on my work placement at the moment, which is good for me, cause I have more time for music! In my spare time I tend to write more tunes, keep singing, and trying to teach myself to play the guitar (learning the guitar is not going very well
anyone out there wanna help a young girl out with that). Apart from singing Desi Music, I love to sing all styles of music, such as; Jazz, r&b, soul, ballads, everything really.
Irfan: In 'Punjabi Hit Squad' album, you sang the song 'Dil Chura Liya' which in my opinion was a wicked tune - did you get much recognition for it?
Nope, I didn't get much recognition for it (after all, I can still walk around my university, and peeps 'still' don't know who I am - he he). I wasn't expecting the track to drop so hard
so I appreciate the recognition I have received. Also 'Thank You' to everyone who is feeling the track, it means a lot to me, especially because it is my debut.
Irfan: I have heard people say they find your voice 'FIT', what do you think of that?
Obviously, a very sweet compliment. I'm glad people are enjoying what they hear. To be honest, I haven't been desensitised to all that kind of talk, so it feels a bit weird when people say that. I always think 'are they REALLY talking about me'? But thanks for all those who commented (pay ya later - he he).
Irfan: It has been said that there is a lack of top quality female singers on the bhangra scene at the moment? Would you agree with them comments?
Well personally, I think the UK talent is HOT, especially female singers. I hear Asian girls singing all the time
the problem is using that talent, and having the guts to put yourself out there in the public eye. It seems to me that many girls are worried as to the criticism they may receive or because of the fears they have about the industry, which ultimately inhibits there growth in the area of music
therefore making it appear there aren't many Asian female singers. The industry is craving for female artists
.I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of them soon!
Irfan: What are you hobbies and pastimes i.e. what do you get up to in your spare time?
Well, I like to sing, write lyrics and poetry, go the gym, hang about with my amazingly supportive housemates, go watch movies
you know, the usual stuff! I'm a very 'home' type person; I love just chilling in the house with my family. Quick shout out to my wonderful sister and her hubbie to be ;)
Irfan: Would you consider singing a song in English to get some mainstream recognition?
Of course! I write/sing and co-produce English songs. Dil Chura Liya was a fortunate experiment
after all; I'm a singer who's only just started out. I wanted to see what I was capable of doing - Dil Chura Liya is the by-product of that. I write many r&b, soul, ballads and some garage tracks.
Irfan: If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would that word be?
"Poetic" - Because I'll confuse the hell out of you, but you can't help but read on! Guess you can say I have that charismatic quality - Kind of handy seen as my name literally means poetry!
Irfan: What should we expect from you in the near future?
Great things, if all goes well! With everyone's continuing support I should hopefully be bringing out some more tunes for you to 'bop' to!
Irfan: Do you have a final message for the thousands of desitunes4u.com visitors all over the world?
Yeah - errmm hello! He he he he! Hope to see everyone soon and keep on visiting DESITUNES4U.
