MC Intensity's
Exclusive Interview

Recently, Irfan had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming stars from the desi music scene, none other than the one and only 'MC Intensity.'

Irfan: How long have you been into the desi music scene i.e. how did it all start for you and what/who has helped you progress?

MC Intensity: To tell you the truth, i was never one for the desi music scene. I have always been heavily involved with the U.K. Garage club scene. I started MC'ing nearly two years ago and tried to perfect my trade as fast as i could. My philosophy is that life is too short and you don't have youth and opportunity on your side for ever so it is best to capitalise on it when you can, which is the reason i have come up as an M.C. in such a short time. MC's Metz & Trix are two very good friends of mine and all three of us are virtually inseparable. For the past year we have been performing around the country on the U.K Garage scene as "The Midnight Lick Crew" which is our Garage crew name, which also includes two Dj's, and another female MC. Trix and myself are childhood friends & we are all inspirations to each other. We all have alot to offer to this industry, whether it is on a solo tip or together. Over the past year i have mc'd with the biggest names in the garage scene such as the So Solid Crew, who are good friends of mine and a big inspiration to me, and also Radio 1's Dreem Teem. In summer i headlined major Garage events in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, which led to me being fully booked in the summer of 2002 back in Ayia Napa. But the time came where i knew it was time to represent my culture and i have embraced the desi music scene because i believe i have alot to offer the music and i believe i can take it to a higher level. Trust me, i am not just saying that. It is what i believe, and when i believe something i set my mind to proving it to all the doubters out there.

Irfan: Do you do this full-time or is it just a part-time passion of yours? I mean what else do you do apart from dj'ing / MC'ing?

MC Intensity: Not many people know this about me but i am currently in my final year as a law student at university. I get booked to MC at clubs all around the country and i do my best to try and fulfil those bookings but sometimes it is hard. I believe education is very important no matter what profession you choose to pursue. My education brings about the creativity in me. This leads to me putting pen to paper and coming up with the rhymes you hear being pumped from Sony speakers inside of a Honda Civic. Right now, i am laying down the foundations in my career. I want to finish off my degree, which is the most important thing. To use an old saying - "You ain't heard nothing yet".

Irfan: On your recent single, Akhiyan Akhiyan, the lyrics that you spoke in the song where different to say the least, did you contribute to writing them?

MC Intensity: One thing i want you and the fans out there to know is that every rhyme you hear from my mouth, is 100% original and i write all my own material. I don't believe in other people writing my lyrics for the simple reason that (and not to sound arrogant when i say this) i don't think there is another MC out there in this scene that can write deeper or more meaningful, constructive, lyrics than myself. And like i said, when i believe something, i will go to any lengths to prove it so watch this space.

Irfan: I think the sudden influx of quality mc's like yourself have featured in some super-hit songs recently, so it would seem the future looks good on the desi MC'ing scene, would you agree?

MC Intensity: Yeah definitely, i mean you have got MC's Metz & Trix out there already with there hits 'Tappe' & 'Putt Sardara De', which i think if you ask them both they would agree that they were the songs that brought them to the forefront in this desi scene so yeah the future does definitely look bright. Metz & Trix are currently working on their album, which features yours truly on one of the tracks, so already you have an entire album out there come December featuring all three of us.

Irfan: Why do you think bhangra has yet to make it mainstream? What do you think that can/should be done to help promote it to this level?

MC Intensity: I think the Bhangra scene has amazing potential, BUT i think their need to be some serious changes made before it can really prosper. I may get hated on by many people for saying this, as it is one of those things that you 'are not supposed to talk about', but i say what i think & i believe there are alot of bad vibes & conflicts concerning politics involved in the music industry, especially in the Asian market. I believe certain management and record companies should start thinking about the future prosperity of Bhangra instead of being so selfish and only thinking about themselves. They exploit artists by throwing them a few crumbs, knowing full well that these artists contribute heavily to turning their records into hits. It is common sense that if you create a good working environment and good relationships with your artists then it can only be beneficial for everyone involved. But when you start screwing people out of the necessities you destroy all trust, which in turn damages the industry as a whole. Artists can't function at 100%, which can only be a disadvantage. I believe where there is no trust there is no hope. This is a very cutthroat business & most people turn a blind-eye to it or try & fool themselves into believing that the problem doesn't exist. But the problem is there and until it is recognised and conquered, the desi music scene will be at a standstill and not prosper to it's full potential. Hopefully, my 'business mind' will help me avoid these problems but you never know.

Irfan: If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would that word be?

MC Intensity: ENIGMATIC/MYSTERIOUS

Irfan: What is your views on the use of english clips in bhangra tracks i.e. do you think it's all right or should we produce our own music?

MC Intensity: I think it can be a good and a bad thing. I believe there definitely should be less English clips & more 'in-house' production. I believe certain people like RDB & Bally Jagpal can get away with it & at the same time produce something that people don't see as a 'rip-off'. But it is something i have never been fond of, maybe because i am myself an innovator. I prefer coming with originality because until you do, alot of people out there will just see you as second-rate & second best. So yeah, i definitely believe alot of producers out there should get their creative 'thinking-caps' on

Irfan: Just out of interest, and for all the female fans out there, do you have a girlfriend?

MC Intensity: The only thing for sure about me is that nothing's for sure.

Irfan: What should we expect from 'MC Intensity' in the near future?

MC Intensity: Well, i will be taking my time as i have got my degree to finish off but at least "Now you know my name" (Get it!). Watch out for the 'Akhiyan' video coming to screens in the next few months and like i mentioned earlier, watch out for the Metz & Trix album "Danger", i will be on there. Look out for some Legacy remixes but trust me, the best is yet to come and i can't tell you what it is right now but it is going to blow your fu****g head off!

Irfan: Do you have a final message for the thousands of desitunes4u.com visitors all over the world?
