Panjabi By Nature's
Exclusive Interview

Recently, DJ Dev had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming stars on the desi music scene at the moment, namely 'Panjabi By Nature.' They are ready to release their new album 'Next Episode' which promises to be one top album. They have worked hard to make sure that you get nothing but quality for this release.

1) Who exactly is Panjabi By Nature? Where are you from?

Panjabi By Nature is a representation of the urban desi sound, this is the name that I use as my production outfit. I developed the name Panjabi By Nature to reflect the music of the Panjab to the nation. The PBN sound comes from the streets of the bhangra capital, the Midlands.

2) You're about to release your new album, 'Next Episode'. Tell us a little about the album. How many tracks are there? Who are the vocalists?

There are a total of 10 tracks on the album, which range from the traditional desi licks to your garage tracks and smooth r&b numbers. I have taken time on the production of this album, recording vocalists in the Panjab and England. The album features established artists such as Dippa Dosanjh to the likes of Amar Arshi. But more importantly introduces fresh talent from both the UK and abroad. A particular vocalist to take note of is KD! I have produced an R&B track titled 'Player', which features KD's vocals this features on NEXT EPISODE.

3) I hear there's a track called Jogi, which is causing a bit of hype?

The track 'Jogi' is a track that I believe will take bhangra music into a new direction in that its sound is very unique! It features the vocal talents of Lalli and another newcomer 'Snit'.

4) There's also a collaboration - Gabroo Haan Da, isn't there?

Gabroo Haan Da is another solid number featuring the vocal talents of Amar Arshi and Lalli. The track can be described as being the essence of bhangra because the track has been based around the tumbi and dhol. Definitely a track for the dance floor!

5) You're last album had a number of different styles, but mainly focused on bhangarage. Can we expect the same kind of thing?

Not at all, the first album was simply a stepping-stone. This album is what Panjabi By Nature is really about. At the time of my previous release garage was the hottest flava! However, this album 'Next Episode' moves bhangra into a new direction, whilst still holding onto today's urban sounds, we still have the Garage, R&B and Hip Hop blends but along with the raw Urban Desi Beats!

6) You've switched record companies for this album, to Limitless Records. Are they a new record company?

Limitless Records is a new record company, which has been set-up to help artists develop and become key players in the music industry. The key reason why I've decided to sign to Limitless Records is they allowed me to spend the last 12 months working on my new album, instead of rushing me into releasing a half finished product.

7) The year 2003 is said to be the year bhangra breaks into the mainstream. Have you got any plans to release anything into the mainstream market?

As mentioned earlier! We definitely are looking to release the track 'Player' into the mainstream. I can't stress enough the talent on this particular track. I think the mainstream will be pleasantly surprised with the sound of this track. I think it will show the mainstream that we can produce music just as good when given the opportunity.

That concludes the interview, firstly a big thanks to Panjabi By Nature for taking some time out to do the interview. The album is out soon so make sure you check out the 'Next Episode' album from a shop near you. To listen to some of the tunes from the album then check out the samples section of the site.
