Recently, Irfan had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming stars from the desi music scene, none other than the one and only 'Tarli Digital.'
1) How long have you been into the desi music scene i.e. how did it all start for you and what/who has helped you progress?
Ive had been deejaying since the age of 16, and from bedroom dj'ing I went to Uni to study media and music tech. Some one passed on a tape of mine to a promoter and it all just blew up. I would say the biggest thing so far to help my career was when I met Surjit Anakhi who I invited on a show I did back in late 2000 at my local community station. He loved a mix I did of his track umbi and asked me to produce it.
2) On the recent Bally Jagpal album, Dark & Direct, it has been said that you were responsible for some of the tracks i.e. Ranjha remix. Is their any truth in this?
The Ranjha remix put me in the light really badly… actually there was a similar mix that I played at gigs, and there was a promotional clip of it on my site so when that particular remix came out everyone thought I did it. I didn't do that mix although its sounds the same.

3) I heard about your radio show, what is it all about and how do we tune in?
I do a show every Friday nights at 10pm till 1am on Apna Radio. It is broadcast across Europe on sky digital channel 913. My show is basically an uplifting UK Asian magazine, with a lot of exclusive new stuff. Check it out!
4) When is your new album coming out cuz I heard a lot of good things about it? Who is gonna feature on it?
My debut album is complete… has been for a couple of weeks. Its called "the dub conspiracy" and it should be out soon on Kamlee Records. It's got 10 tracks and features Dalvinder Singh, Labh Janjua, Master Saleem and others. |

5) What is your opinion on mp3 downloads? What do you think are the benefits and drawbacks of them? How do you think they are affecting the industry?
There are no benefits really; anyone who downloads a song and has a cd writer only has intentions to burn it on CD. It is piracy and to be honest the more people download music the less revenue the industry makes, the more expensive it gets for us to produce quality material. And then people complain about "cd prices"
6) What is your opinion on the sudden influx of 4 to 6 track EP's (i.e. Untruly Yours & Ambersariya)? I mean do you think it's fair to charge £10 for 4 tracks? Personally I think it's a rip off and an album should contain at least 8 tracks, what is your opinion on this matter?
I cant comment on this for various reasons but what I will say is I believe in giving punters quality for money, that's why I did extra remixes on my album.

7) Why do you think bhangra has yet to make it mainstream? What do you think that can/should be done to help promote it to this level?
For starters there is no unity in the uk asian scene… no much piracy as well as other financial matters prevent actual numbers of sales to be published. Because the industry does not use sampling wisely it would be costly too.
8) What should we expect from 'Tarli Digital' in the near future? |
Im working very hard at the moment, im doing various projects for the Moviebox group so watch this space. Ive done two remixes on the forthcoming Anakhi album called "Surreal". Also projects with Legacy, Dalvinder Singh and a couple of newcomers to name. Im Dj'ing across the country so catch me at your local venues!
