Recently, DJ Dev had the pleasure of interviewing one of the best up and coming stars on the desi music scene at the moment, namely 'The Jackal.' He has recently signed for the big boys on the bhangra scene, Moviebox following his successful debue album called 'The Jackal - 4th Dimension.' He is soon releasing his brand new album entitled 'Dawn Of The Jackal.'
1) So how's work on you're new album going? Any ideas when it's going to be coming out and who is going to be featuring on it?
It's all finished and in the hands of Moviebox at the moment we are just finalising the video shoot and hopefully the album will be released around mid July.
|
2) Your last album had a lot of remixed material; can we expect much of the same?
Not really this album is quite the contrary and has been produced on much a deeper level, it incorporates complex production and is musically composed on a higher level with use of a lot of live instruments.
3) You were one of the early producers bringing out what I call 'Bhan-garage' - Bhangra mixed with Garage. Do you |
 |
| think this is the only way forward for the industry, or do you feel that there is just way too much of it at the moment? |
Hmm... I like to call it Garhangra, lol ok garage is good and fusing it with Asian vocals can be tricky if it don't flow right a lot of the stuff I have heard is basically put together for the sake of a release and quick money grab moment which I think is letting the whole Asian industry down we need to make real music be a bit more inventive and if you gonna remix then make it DAMN GOOD. Garage to me ain't the sole move forward for Bhangra at all I think its just a good seller at the moment and some stuff does well especially for the clubs and is put together for those purposes. Over all Bhangra will always stay as Bhangra - tumbi dhol and stuff and in the end it's the traditional tracks that always have the longer life.
4) I heard that you are a bit of a player? Is their any truth in this?
Yes there is
a big time player of my DEX and Playstation
5) Which artists would you most like to work with, on the bhangra scene?
Any that wants an alternative style of production done.
|
|
6) What is your top three all time Bhangra tunes?
I can't really say to be honest there is a lot of decent stuff out there.
7) What do you think of the large influx of EPs with only 3 or 4 tracks, being sold for ten pounds in the shops? Do you think it is fair on the consumer?
I don't think it is fair at all I believe that if a particular CD or producer has the recognition and respect from |
| the consumers then the rates should reflect in the price for selling that particular album. |
8) What's happened to your website?
I never paid the bill but its back up again.
9) Do you think bhangra will ever make it to the mainstream?
No, I don't think it will, we have to be realistic all the attempts made so far have made us look even worse than what we really represent. You wanna break into the mainstream then you make a mainstream record get the recognition and respect from the people and then give them the alternative desi rhythms in time so they listen and accept it with their eyes and minds wide open.
|
10) I think there are just too many tunes coming out with just some Punjabi lyrics being thrown on top of some popular R'n'B or Garage beat. Would you agree that more producers should be making their own beats, rather than just ripping off an English one?
100% agree that producers should work there own beats I mean sometimes having the odd loop here and there is nice but when you get a constant |
|
| album ripped off with mainstream loops you have to think twice about the people putting such crap together. |
11) What else can we expect from The Jackal in the future?
Big things of course I want to promote new talent and possibly the creation of a new band that's my next big step.
12) Any final words for the thousands of desitunes4u.com visitors?
Big Up yo chests and keep the peace and listen to Star Fm in the south east coz it's the real deal
Peace
That concludes the interview, so make sure you check out 'Dawn Of The Jackal' album when it hits the shops near you. It's gonna be phat; remember you've been warned! If you wanna contact 'The Jackal' personally then you can e-mail him at thejackalxxx@hotmail.com.
