MTV European music award for best dance act (above). He was nominated with such artist as Moby and the chemical brothers. Accepting the award Panjabi MC said "east meets west I been doing it for a long time". It's been a great year for bhangra and Asian music and the mainstream is finally giving credit to those that deserve it. |
From the EMA's to the AMA's, the biggest night in asian music took place in October as the first ever UK Asian Music Awards got underway in the Po na na club in Hammersmith. The event was hosted by Zee Music's Sangeeta and Radio 1's Nilha. The AMA's had categories ranging from best group to the commitment to the scene award sponsored by various organisations and companies. Winners on the night included Indy Sagu for best new comer, B21 as best group and RDB as best club DJ's. Bally Sagoo picked up the lifetime achievement award for his work from the 80's and early 90's, in his speech he said he was glad he had the chance to open the doors to new talent. The event was marked by performances by Jay Sean, Rishi Rich and Juggy D and B21, Dr Zeus and General Levy performing their soon to be released shake what ya mama gave ya. On the whole the event was a success and was also broadcast on ITV1 last week as you may have learned from this site.
Panjabi Hit Squad's much hyped mix CD Desi Beats Vol 1 finally has finally hit the shops and to read a detailed review then click here. It features 2 CD's divided into a mainstream R&B and Hip Hop CD and a bhangra CD. The album features new cuts from the hit squad and some familiar hits from 2003. Released under Def Jam UK it marks history as the first bhangra album to be released under a hip hop label. The video has also made it on to our screens but not just on Zee Music, you can catch the video for Hai Hai Part 2 on MTV Base and Channel U and also on PHS's 1xtra show page at www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra. Don't forget you can also catch the Squad mixing it up this week on Tuesday the 18th at The Click in London, where they will be performing along side Jay Sean and co and other 1xtra DJs. If you can't make it then make sure you catch Desi Beats the show on 1xtra from midnight Monday.
On the new album side of things, Dr Zeus has hit back with a killer album since his last EP High Life back in 2002. Under da influence is a sure fire hit, with tracks like Kagna and Gwandian Dhol re-lick destined to be pumped in the rude boys sub woofers down Southall Broadway. It will feature new material from the boys and other untouchable artists.
